Mission Statement
• Grand Lake Montessori School serves children from 18 months through 12 years, using
Montessori principles and other innovative teaching practices.
• The classrooms foster individual growth and create a sympathetic community that enables
children to work out conflicts and to develop loving relations with peers and adults.
• Teachers offer a multi-sensory learning environment that promotes respect, cooperation,
order and choice within limits.
• Through individual and small group lessons, and the powerful experience of peer teaching, a
child's natural desire to learn is nurtured and cultivated throughout the most formative years.
• By cherishing ethnic differences and supporting economic diversity, we create a community
that encourages global awareness and social responsibility.

Our Staff
The staff of our school mirrors the rich diversity of Oakland in its people. We believe that the experience of diversity (diversity of race, gender, ethnic origin, economics and opinion) creates a rich learning environment and is necessary preparation for living in a diverse world.
GLM actively seeks diversity when sponsoring, recruiting, or hiring teachers, who in addition to their undergraduate degrees, have spent an intensive year in graduate training, learning the Montessori philosophy and methods. All teachers have completed course work in early childhood education. The school encourages and offers funds for continuing education. The average tenure of teachers ranges from 8 to 14 years.

Established in 1978 under the name "Casa dei Bambini" (Italian for House of Children), we are one of the oldest Montessori schools in the Bay Area.
Now known as Grand Lake Montessori (GLM), the school has an enrollment of more than 160 children from Pre-school through Elementary.
GLM has been described as "Montessori with a buzz".
GLM has served a diverse population, and has had a diverse faculty and student body since the 1970's.
Many GLM teachers have been with the school for more than ten years.
GLM is a place where teachers, parents and children grow, a school where we can get to know everyone by name.
At GLM, children grow and form lasting friendships, which continue on into other schools.
At GLM we have "Porous Walls" a description from a parent. Children can get the time and attention they need to develop skills and mature. They can travel to visit an older class and work; they can return to a previous class and help mentor younger children.
At GLM we have had an elementary program for over 12 years with a dedicated team of teachers. In addition, we offer specialists who teach Spanish, music, dance and art.
GLM children have successfully transferred into every grade level of both the public and private school systems and gone on to successful college careers.
Currently there are former GLM kids at Community School (a new Junior High), Berkeley Montessori Junior High, Beacon, Head/Royce, Park Day, Redwood Day and Julia Morgan.
In High School, there are former GLM kids at College Preparatory School, Piedmont High, Lick Wilmerding, and Bishop O'Dowd.
At GLM children learn test-taking skills after 2nd grade. Anecdotal records and detailed cumulative records accompany the child.
