| Toddlers We accept children at 18 months of age according to space available. The adult-child ratio is 1:6 in a class with 2-3 teachers. The program provides activities indoors and out that encourage movement, language enrichment and independence; thus readying the child for the Montessori program for 3-6 year olds. This environment is a comfortable child-sized space fitted out simply with a quiet book corner, very low tables where children sit or kneel on the floor, shelves containing puzzles, manipulative games, art and daily living activities. Routines are simple; an activity period from 9:00 to 10:30 A.M., snack, and then out to the playarea with outdoor shelves and lots of outdoor activities. In bad weather there are musical games, mats and soft balls to use indoors. Group lessons might consist of three or four children matching pictures in a language exercise, or watching the teacher show an activity. The environment changes over the year from a class including familiar activities and toys from home to a more stimulating and demanding one that begins to include individual rugs as work space, food preparation exercises and oral games with sounds. Daily, the children sing, hear poems, play rhythm games experience art media. The teacher at this level maintains the ground rules with flexibility in response to individual behavior. A lap is always available as a secure place from which to watch or as a simple physical presence that assures the child that the world is to be trusted. |
