TEACHER APPRECIATION LUNCHEON
On Wednesday the GLM staff was generously treated to a fantastic luncheon provided by parents! There were lasagnas (veggies & meat), sushi, fried chicken, pork tenderloin, fruit salads, green salads, noodle salad, Chinese food, chips & dips, and desserts…oh, …the desserts: Cheese cake, brownies, cookies, chocolate cake, blueberry cheese cake, strawberry cake, chocolate-covered blueberries, Ambrosia, chocolate bundt cake, strawberries and cream cheese, and more…! It was an incredible assortment of foods. The teachers and the administrative staff thank our wonderful parents from the bottom of our bloated, over-fed, and very satisfied bellies!

ALL-SCHOOL PICNIC
THIS FRIDAY, JUNE 4TH, 5 PM
This is a time to visit other families and celebrate the end of the school year. Be sure to dress in layers – even on warm days the fog may roll in and it can get quite chilly. Please bring your own plates, cups and eating utensils to cut down on paper use, and food to share with 6-8 people. Sign up sheets for food assignments, set-up, BBQ detail, clean-up and child supervision are in the binders and posted around campus. All parents are responsible for picking up their children from school at their regular times. Staff will not be taking children to the picnic. Please be prepared to watch your own children; staff will not be on duty at the picnic. GETTING TO LAKE TEMESCAL: Take Broadway north, past the College Ave. intersection to Highway 13 (Warren Freeway) Frontage Road. Stay to the right after the light and continue on this road to the lake parking lot, which is on the right. (Note: the elementary class only is planning to be at the lake ALL day.)
BE AWARE THAT WE HAVE SEVERAL CHILDREN AT GLM WITH VERY SERIOUS ALLERGIES TO NUTS. PLEASE DO NOT USE ANY NUTS OR NUT PRODUCTS IN FOODS BROUGHT TO THE PICNIC.

SOUND OF THE WEEK Each Wednesday your child is encouraged, with your help, to find an object at home (preferably not a toy) that begins with the sound of the week. Put it in a labeled bag to share with your child’s class. The sound for next week is “WH” as in Whip, Whale, and Wheel.

AUCTION RESULTS
With number-crunching completed, the GLM 2004 Auction generated a profit of $17,763.00! Of this $7,763.00 will go to enrichment programs and $10,000.00 will go to the Financial Aid program. The biggest seller was the Sunriver getaway for $650.00. Class projects were hot items: the Camellia class serving platter brought in $325.00, the Live Oak game table $375, and the Jacaranda and Ginkgo quilts together raised nearly $600.00! There are still 4 seats left on the Wine country bus tour. Contact Amy Marcus at 510-658-1635 if interested in the tour.
Thank you to all the people who worked to make this such successful event!

CLASS News

LIVE OAK – MS. CHURCH
Hugs, kisses, and thank yous to our parents for the wonderful Teacher Appreciation Feast! We were certainly well-fed!
We’re rounding the bend into the last weeks of school. This Thursday, June 3rd, we will host the Live Oak Class Tea. This is a time set aside to allow the children closure with those that they have spent the last 9 1/2 months, their classroom family.
Some of the children will stay on in the fall, in Live Oak, or the elementary class. Others will be here for summer camp, and others will be moving onto new schools. To help us help your children make these transitions, it is helpful for them to know where they will be this summer and fall. If s/he is having a last day in Live Oak, please write down or email that date to Ms. Church. This includes summer camp children as well. This way we will be sure to get all of our “good-byes” in.
You may notice extra items coming home between now and next Friday. For those children who are having their last day on June 11th, we will try to send everything home including: extra clothes, nap blankets, papers, artwork, etc. If your child attends summer camp or will be here in the fall, please be sure to update their extra clothes!
The children are really looking forward to the all-school picnic this Friday evening! There will be loads of food, lawn activities, and a circus performer! See you all there!

GINKGO – MS. NITONDE
Thank you to Denise Slattery (Finnegan’s mom) for coming to do a presentation about Walla Walla, WA. Walla means “water” in the local native American language, and Walla Walla is a beautiful city in southeast Washington. Grapes and wine making are popular in the state, and Finn’s family will be setting up their own winery! Denise gave the class a book called “Moving House”, and the children shared their own moving experiences with each other. The Ginkgo class, as well as the entire GLM family, wishes the Michener-Slattery family all the best! May they all enjoy great adventures! Farewell!
Thank you to Hans, Rory Reiser’s dad, for bringing big picture books to class about jellyfish, fishing trawlers, rescue helicopters, the Empire State Building, castles, oil rigs, and steam trains, just to name a few! The children were particularly fascinated by how steam trains operate!
Thank you also to Rory’s mom, Nina, for donating the Montessori puzzle materials and five books to the class!
Hope we will see everyone at the school picnic this Friday at Lake Temescal!

MAGNOLIA – MS. OLIVARES
Wow, how time flies! There is only one more week left of school!
A huge thank you to Jamie Sharman (a transitioning toddler and future Magnolia member) for sharing delicious banana bread with the children! They really loved the treat!
In art with Ms. Owens, the children did beautiful watercolor paintings on canvas that will be displayed at the GLM art show!
Our End of the Year tea party/luncheon is scheduled for next Wednesday, June 9th. Watch for a note in your child’s backpack informing you of your child’s contribution to the party.

CAMELLIA – MS. ALLEN
Happy birthday to Thomas, who turned 3 the end of May! Many children were visiting primary classes in the morning, so after nap time we celebrated with Thomas. Thank you to Thomas and his family for the gift of the book and the special snack!
Mr. Tien gave the class a lesson on cleaning this week. Just like the primary children, the toddlers are now washing their dishes, and cleaning the outside tables for lunch!
All the children miss Ms. Allen and we are planning to send her a special card, letting her know that we are thinking of her. The children are aware that she is going to have a baby, and needs to stay home and rest. A few children have asked when will they get to see the baby!
Mr. Tien has been in the Camellia class now for two weeks, and really appreciates the opportunity to work around toddlers. “They are very different from the primary children. It is good for me to be around them when they are younger, and observe the way they move, talk, work, and interact”. And, the toddlers certainly seem to enjoy having Mr. Tien around!

MULBERRY – MS. AIMA
Thank you to Jean Rubsamen for donating books and puzzles to the toddlers, who always love to receive new materials! Thank you to Diana Fong for supplying us with parakeet food, and a HUGE thank you to Chris Becker for faithfully doing our school grocery shopping!
With the warm weather here to stay for a while we are spending a lot of time outdoors and enjoying water play so don’t forget to apply sunscreen. The teachers will reapply it throughout the day.
This weeks favorite song is “If You’re Happy and You Know It”. The children especially like “acting out” the different verses; If you’re scary and you know it give a GROWL… If you’re silly and you know it LAUGH a lot!

JUNIPER - MS. KOERBER
Many of the Juniper class children are going to be leaving early for their vacations. If your child is not planning to attend the summer program, please say good-bye now as there is only one week left of school!
On Thursday, June 10th, from 10 – 12, we will enjoy our Year End Cultural/Feast Day. More details coming – watch your Parent Pocket!
For the past two weeks Mr. Julius Walker, from Childcare Careers, has been subbing in our class while Mr. Tien has been helping in the Camellia class (covering for Ms. Allen who is out on maternity leave). Mr. Walker has very quickly become part of our classroom; please be sure to introduce yourselves and say hello!
Great news! Kemberley, the Strandberg’s care-giver, has agreed to continue giving once-weekly Spanish lessons in our classroom during the 2004-05 school year!
Thank you to all our parents for the wonderful feast they brought us for Teacher Appreciation Day!

JACARANDA – MS. LECK
Please let the Jacaranda teachers know if your child is having a “last day” in the Jacaranda classroom in the upcoming last days of the school year. The Jacaranda class will be having a formal tea as a way of saying farewell to those who are leaving. This provides the children with closure in the many important relationships they have formed in the class, both with other children and the adults in the class. The tea will be on June 8th, in the morning. Please have the food or drink, chosen by majority vote, in the class by the 6th. We will need no parent help on this occasion.
Happy birthday to Avery von Herrmann, which he celebrated with the class on June 1st.
Yes, folks, that is a corn plant growing near the sidewalk outside the Jacaranda class, planted from a fall corn cob last year, and diligently cared for to its current size! The children had faith (which this adult lacked) that the corn would germinate, and with a little water, sun, and yes, faith, it did!
Kid quote of the week: “I wasn’t shaking my head, I was cleaning the floor with my hair…”
Thank you to parents for the Teacher Appreciation Day feast! What great food we were treated to!
We hope to see everyone at the End of the Year Picnic at Lake Temescal this Friday evening!

REDWOOD – MS. RANKINS
Thank you to everyone who attended the elementary spring performance! The children did a remarkable job. The children’s parts in the play were written specifically for each child; the roles matched the personalities of the children!
Thank you to Mary Aima and Cindy Lewis for chaperoning us on our field trip to see the Montessori School of Fremont’s opera, “Burning Rice Fields”. The opera is set in Japan and tells the tale of an elderly woman trying to save her village from destruction.
Remember, this Friday our class will spend the afternoon at Lake Temescal. We still need parents to help transport the children to the lake. If you are able to help, please let Ms. Rankins know.
The children will be swimming at the lake, and will change into swim clothes before leaving school. Please be sure to send your child to school on Friday with a backpack that includes a swimsuit, a towel, sunscreen, shade hat, water sandals/shoes, and any beach toys they want to bring (no lunch needed – the school will be providing lunch). Everything must be clearly labeled with your child’s name.
Ms. Rankins and Ms. Mack-Keeles will be providing childcare at the lake from 3:30 to 5:00, at which time the elementary group will meet at the east end of the lake when the all-school picnic will be beginning. All elementary pick-ups (from 3:30 on) will be at the lake; no one is returning to GLM.
It is time for Spring conferences. The sign-up sheet is located on the class bulletin board.
