STAFF IN-SERVICE DAY & SILENT JOURNEY
Friday, Oct. 22nd is a Staff In-service Day. There will be no school or childcare. It is also the first Silent Journey of the year.

HALLOWEEN
This year, GLM’s Halloween Celebration takes place on Friday, Oct. 29th. Parents are encouraged to accompany their children to the event. Bring a camera! Children should come dressed in costume (over their school clothes, if possible). Changing out of costumes should be made as simple as possible for the children and the teachers. Please, no masks or weapons, as these things can be scary and dangerous! The schedule is:
8:30 Children arrive in costume
9-9:05 Parade
9:05-9:45 Crafts
9:45 Classes assemble in their lunch areas for snack and children say GOODBYE to parents (parents should take costumes home at this time).
10:00 Children go to class
Teachers will discuss specific Halloween needs and activities with their Room Parents.
Parking will be a challenge. Come early to find a spot on the lot or street. The parking lot will be closed once it is full. All activities will be on the upper yard and asphalt play area.
The down driveway will be closed that morning to enable parents and children to walk in safely. All parents will be leaving between 9:45 and 10:00 am.

CONGRATULATIONS!
Congratulations to toddler teacher (Camellia class), Denise Allen, on the recent birth of her daughter, Chanise Faith! Chanise was born on October 14th, and weighed 5 lbs, 14 oz. She has a full head of hair and is absolutely gorgeous!

SOUND OF THE WEEK Each Wednesday your child is encouraged, with your help, to find an object at home (preferably not a toy) that begins with the sound of the week. Put it in a labeled bag to share with your child’s class. The sound for next week is “G” as in Ghost, Goblin, and Grim.

2005/2006 ENROLLMENT OF GLM SIBLINGS
To current families interested in enrolling siblings in the 2005-2006 school year, please contact the school office to request an application form ASAP.

PARENTS NIGHT OUT (PNO)
Ms. Leck is hosting a PNO on Saturday, October 23, from 6 pm to 11 pm, in the Jacaranda classroom. Children should arrive in their PJs, and bring a sleeping bag. A snack, crafts and a movie will be provided. The cost is $35.00 for one child and $55.00 for two. Children must be at least 2.5 years old.
An organic pizza will be served for dinner. If you would like your child to participate in the dinner please confirm by adding $3.00 to your check.
Advance payment reserves your spot. Call Ms. Leck at home 510-663-8770, or e-mail sidleck@earthlink.net.

OPERA DVDS
Some families have yet to pick up their copy of the opera DVD, On The Road to Freedom. If you ordered the DVD, please stop by either school office for your copy.

CLASS News

LIVE OAK
We had a tremendous rain storm on Tuesday! Thank you for your cooperation during drop-off and pick-up! On days like Tuesday, we ask that you drive through as usual, but stop at the top of the driveway where a teacher will assist your child out of the car and give you the clipboard to sign-in. This will greatly help alleviate any possible back up, and make for a safer drop-off for all. You may still park and walk your child in if you wish.
As you know, our picture day was postponed until Wednesday. The photo sessions went very well and everyone was relaxed. Maybe it was the sunshine breaking through that did it!
In Second Step we talked about respecting ourselves, each other, and our environment. A very important subject, and one you can also discuss at home.
For Sound of the Week we shared a Football, Fan, Frogs, Fork, Fish, Flying dragon, and fairies. Next week will be G, so bring some Gadgets and Goodies to share!

GINKGO
Lucia’s mom, Cindy Fressola, joined our class this week to make raisin bread with the children. Each child made his/her own mini-loaf and stuffed it with raisins. Then after baking, the children enjoyed digging the raisins out like buried treasure before eating them!
Thank you to Connor Lee’s mom, Randi, for doing Halloween art with the children this week. They decorated cat, ghost and pumpkin magnets!
Aidan’s grandmother, Anne Conry, came and read to the class from two books, “It Takes a Village to Raise a Child” and “The Paper Baby Princess”. The latter of the two she donated to our class. Thank you very much!
We are in need of 10 clean, baby food jars to separate the tiles of the 100-board.
Also, we are always happy to accept small child-size bottles, boxes, trays, etc., to use in our Practical Life area.
If anyone has carpentry skills, we’d love to talk to you about making some materials for the children to use.
Thank you!

MAGNOLIA
Thank you Magnolia parents! All of our volunteer slots for Halloween are filled!
This week we had many Fun objects for Sound of the Week; French Fries, Fabric, the number Four, Fork and a Feather.
Isaiah Lenoue celebrated his 3rd birthday this week. He shared a yummy treat of cantaloupe and croissants. He also gave the class a beautiful wooden spoon that we will use in the Practical Life area. Thank you!
The Observations and Conferences sign-up sheet will soon be on the clipboard. Observations are a great way to get an insight into your child’s time at school. Please schedule an Observation before you have your Conference (in November).

CAMELLIA
Wow, believe it or not, Halloween is almost here! Time goes by so fast! Please bring a pumpkin for the Camellia-Mulberry pumpkin patch on Oct. 25, 26, 27 and 28. And don’t forget to sign-up to help with the Halloween Activities booths (sign-up on the Brown Cottage kitchen door). Thank you!
The weather has become very cold, so please dress your children warmly. Be sure that ALL CLOTHING is marked with your child’s name.
The children look forward to Mr. Hoffman’s visits every week. They have their favorite songs; “Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star” and “The Wheels on the Bus”, but they are fascinated with the new instruments he brings to demonstrate. Thank you, Mr. Hoffman!

MULBERRY
Thanks again to Casey for giving us the rubber sea creatures in honor of her birthday last week! We have put them on our Language Shelf.
The children have been learning the different Halloween objects; bat, black cat, candy corn, spider, witch, pumpkin, Jack O’ Lantern, and ghost. We have a matching work as well as a song about the items:
The witch is here to stay, the witch is here to stay,
Hi-ho, it’s Halloween, the witch is here to stay.
The witch takes the cat, the witch takes the cat,
Hi-ho, it’s Halloween, the witch takes the cat.
The cat takes the bat, the cat takes the bat…
(and so on, interjecting the various Halloween items mentioned above.)

JUNIPER
Do your children have access to plenty of fruits and vegetables at home?
~ Do you keep a bowl of fresh fruit on the counter?
~ Do you keep easy to eat vegetables and low-fat dip in the refrigerator where your children can reach them?
~ Do you serve two vegetables with dinner?
~ Do you set a good example by snacking on fresh fruit?
Let’s all lead the way; choose fruits, vegetables and physical activity.
As we know, the weather is changing. Please, if possible, send your child with the following rain gear: boots, poncho or raincoat, rain hat, gloves. Sometimes we will enjoy a stroll in the rain during the day (no umbrellas, please).

JACARANDA
Rainy days are here. Please remember to dress your children warmly, in sweaters, coats, hats and gloves if necessary. Remember, also, that children wearing rain boots are given the opportunity to splash in puddles!
The children were well dressed and groomed for the photos on Monday and Tuesday, even after braving the rainstorm walking to the group photo.
Speaking of rain, we understand the well-attended Jacaranda class family gathering on Sunday was saved when the Bryans played impromptu host. Thank you, Suzie, Marc, Megan and Laura!
“Superhero” talk comes to school, no matter how much we encourage it to “stay home”. The other day, someone explained how he was bitten by an “active radio spider” and became Spider Man!
While listening to the “Marriage of Figaro” by Mozart in the afternoon, one of the children said the music made him think of a “zombie”, and many of the group agreed the music was scary. The teacher’s response was neutral, allowing the children to form their own impressions.
Happy 3rd birthday to Kellen, who brought in a fruit snack to celebrate with the whole class!

REDWOOD
Unfortunately, our class was unable to go to the library due to the uncooperative weather! We will return to our regular schedule for the next trip.
If you change your e-mail address, be sure to let us know as we are sending our class news and votes via e-mail. If you prefer to receive hard copies, let us know. Needless to say, if you change your address, phone, emergency pick-up people, etc., please contact the office.
In our classroom we have room maintenance responsibilities, one of which is morning snack. On Wednesday, Kennedy (who is responsible for snack), along with his partner, Zachary, did a wonderful job making biscuits! First, they tripled the recipe, then prepped and assembled all the ingredients. Kennedy was in charge of the wet ingredients and Zachary in charge of the dry. All their measurements were very precise! They kneaded the dough and cut out the biscuits! We all enjoyed the excellent job they did!
As winter approaches, so does the cold weather. In lieu of the children using cough drops or throat lozenges, we have them make themselves a warm cup of tea.
