A NOTE FROM OUR MONTESSORI CONSULTANT, SANFORD JONES
Today, more than ever before, with the increased emphasis on technology, music and movement are vital ingredients not only to the wholeness of the developing child, but to the very preservation of culture, through poetry, music and dance.
Friday’s all-staff in-service is a workshop that is designed to help both Montessori teachers and music and movement specialists to implement a comprehensive and developmentally based program of music and movement. These exercises and games are appropriate for children in primary and lower elementary classes.
After Friday’s workshop the staff will participate in a weekend retreat facilitated by Mr. Jones.
MESSAGE FROM ALAMEDA COUNTY HEALTH CARE
SERVICE AGENCY
PUBLIC HEALTH DEPARTMENT
Alameda County will receive less than 50% of the flu vaccine doses ordered. Please be aware, however, there appears to be an adequate supply of pediatric flu vaccine. Please contact your pediatrician if you have questions. The vaccine is not available through the Public Health Department.
SOUND OF THE WEEK Each Wednesday your child is encouraged, with your help, to find an object at home (preferably not a toy) that begins with the sound of the week. Put it in a labeled bag to share with your child’s class. The sound for next week is “J”, as in Jug, Joke, and Jacaranda.
DIRECTORY ERROR
In the school directory Deonne Kunkel is listed as one of the Parent Volunteer Coordinators by mistake. The 3rd PVC is Heidi Hudson. Her e-mail is hudsonlaw@mac.com, phone number is 510-261-4729. We apologize for any confusion.
LOST CAMERA
Ms. Church lost her camera during the Halloween festivities on Friday, Oct. 29. It was in a black “bat” bag, hanging on a branch in the lawn area. If you found it please let Ms. Church (Live Oak class) know.

Ms. Leck is hosting a PNO on Saturday, November 20th, from 6 pm to 11 pm, in the Jacaranda classroom. Children should arrive in their PJs, and bring a sleeping bag. CLASS News
LIVE OAK
Thank you, parents, for your efforts and respect when entering our classroom during these days of observations. The children have put forward great effort in order to make your visits great! For the past two weeks we have been practicing how to politely say “Hello” to visitors without disturbing their “work”.
Parent-teacher conferences are next Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday. If you have not yet signed-up for a space, please do so. If the times available are difficult for your schedule, please talk to Ms. Church. Be sure to turn in your pre-conference form to Ms. Church no later than next Monday, Nov. 15th.
Thank you!
GINKGO
We would like to thank Shirley Saunders, Max Sharnoff’s mom, for sharing with our class some of the history of England. The children learned that on November 5th, the English remember King James and Guy Fawkes by having a fireworks display. She also gave the class pictures of churches, the Parliament, Big Ben, and palace guards in London!
We discovered that even though people in England speak English, it is a little different. Here are some examples:
Elevator is a Lift
Trunk of a car is a Boot
Gas station is a Petrol station
Dresser is a Jumper
For our Thanksgiving celebration we are planning to focus on family this year. We ask that you send a family photo to school that your child can share and discuss with classmates.
We have been reading a Thanksgiving poem to ready the children for the big holiday. Many children are enjoying learning it and reciting themselves.
MAGNOLIA
Calling all volunteers! We need 6 helpers for our Thanksgiving Feast (Monday, Nov. 22nd), as well as to assist the children make their placemats. Each child will be asked to bring specific ingredients, and they will prepare the feast themselves. Details will be in the next newsletter.
We celebrated Ms. Santiago’s birthday on Monday with a snack of granola bars and apples. The children loved this special snack!
Last week the class began working on a lacing project during Ms. Owens’ art class. They really enjoyed doing these fun and creative projects!
CAMELLIA
Thank you to all the families who attended the Camellia get-together in Robert’s Park on Saturday! Unfortunately, Mr. Tien had a prior commitment and was unable to join everyone for the fun.
We have learned that by adding or substituting sounds in familiar songs, we are helping children begin to focus on the sounds that make up their speech. Take the following song (sung to the tune of “Someone’s in the Kitchen With Dinah”):
I have a song that we can sing
I have a song that we can sing
I have a song that we can sing
It goes something like this:
Fe-Fi-Fiddly-I-O
Fe-Fi-Fiddly-I-O-O-O-O
Fe-Fi-Fiddly-I-OOOOO
(now, try singing it, replacing the Fe- Fi, with the Z sound)
Ze-Zi-Ziddly-I-O, etc
(or sing it with a BR sound)
Bre-Bri-Briddly-I-O, etc.
Have fun with it!
Remember to sign-up for observations and conferences! The sign-up sheets are on the clipboard.
Thank you!
MULBERRY
Thank you to Ondrea Riley for sewing washcloths for us, and to Crossley Dellis for doing the class laundry!
Please welcome Alice Sigal to our class! She has an older brother, Ben, in the Jacaranda class!
Observations have begun. If you haven’t signed-up yet, please refer to the clipboard and select a time on the sign-up sheet. There are also sign-ups for conferences on the clipboard. Ms. Aima asks that both parents attend the conferences together. You will be getting a “Pre-Conference” questionnaire form to complete and return the week before conferences.
Song of the week: The Tiny Caterpillar
The Tiny Caterpillar crawled upon a leaf,
Spun a little chrysalis, then fell fast asleep.
While she was sleeping she dreamt she could fly.
Later, when she woke up, she was a butterfly!
JUNIPER
REMINDERS:
~ Sign-up for your conference!
~ Turn in your pre-conference form! By Nov. 10th.
~ Please make sure your child has the proper change of clothing in his/her bag on the hook (weather appropriate, and that fit!). These are also emergency clothes for your children. Everything, from socks to jackets, must be labeled with your child’s name.
Thank you!
Have a great Veteran’s Day and weekend!
JACARANDA
We have been enjoying a visit from Montessori Consultant, Sanford Jones, this week. He is observing our classes, sharing his wisdom, and serving as our Retreat Facilitator this weekend.
Happy birthday to Megan Bryan and Mr. Keating! Megan is 5 years old and Mr. Keating turned…older!
We are looking for two to three volunteers to help the children prepare their Thanksgiving feast on Monday the 22nd and Tuesday the 23rd in the morning. The children will be asked to bring in a contribution for the feast. A note will be put in the cubbies next week.
Observations are over and conference time is almost upon us. Please return the Pre-conference communication forms to Ms. Leck by Wednesday, Nov. 10th! These are very helpful as they assist Ms. Leck in planning your conference time efficiently. Please be mindful of the 30 minute time limit for each conference. Ms. Leck looks forward to her meetings with you next week!
We have noticed that non-recyclable containers have been slipping back into the lunches again. Please, please, can you keep up the good work and continue to support us in our Lunch Policy? Thank you to all those who do. Those little slips of paper in your child’s lunchbox are pleas to you to do your best!
REDWOOD
The children have been busy making and decorating sugar skulls to commemorate the Day of the Dead. They have also been sharing their Day of the Dead items with the rest of the class.
Currently, the children are learning the names of the African animals of the Savannah and how to count in Swahili!
Our class in participating in the President’s Physical Education Program. This is a program that promotes nutrition and five strength/endurance activities. The activities are speed of walking/running one mile, number of chin-ups a child can do, number of stomach crunches a child can do, speed of a “shuttle” run, and measurement of how far they can stretch their arms from a sitting position. We will see at the end of the year how much better they have gotten!
It is soccer season at GLM! The class has been playing soccer for P.E. and everyone is very good at the various assigned positions.
