GET ON THE BUS
Tour Sonoma in Style!
We have seats left for the 3rd Annual GLM Wine Tour. On Sunday, November 6 join other GLM parents, friends and relatives as we tour Sonoma. We'll have a private driver courtesy of Black Tie Transportation and due to the generosity of Dreyers Ice Cream. For only $65 per person we will enjoy a day of wine tasting and lunch. The day will include: 9am Departure from GLM. First stop is B.R. Cohn Winery. We'll move on to a delicious lunch at Olive & Vine Restaurant. Chef/Owner Cynthia Driggers is personally preparing the menu and will be welcoming us to her fabulous restaurant. Then we'll visit Chateau St. Jean and finish our day at Cline Cellars. This is a fundraiser supporting GLM's financial aid program and arts education. Please email Amy Marcus at afmarcus@comcast.net to secure your seats. This is a great opportunity to meet, relax and socialize with other GLM families.

CLASS NEWS

REDWOOD (ELEMENTARY)
The children did a wonderful job with their bake sale! They raised $484! They are already planning a car wash to raise more money. Thank you to all of the parents who were so supportive. Fundraising is something the children feel very passionate about. They really feel it is an obligation to help others.
“It’s important to help people who really need help.” – Crystal
“When you help someone you get a feeling in your body that you know you did something really good and you feel good about yourself, and you’re helping others in need.” – Brea
This week Kennedy made the following comments while looking at our garden:
“Hey, I get now how fruits grow! The zucchini is the old ovary and the flower part is dying. So it’s going to fall. Zucchinis only come from the ovary and other fruits come from the flowers and the ovaries. Zucchinis are a kind of berry because their seeds only have a mesocarp around them!”
We started dance this week and the children are learning a partner two-step. They are very excited.

JACARANDA
Thanks to Leila's parents, Andrew and Madeleine, for helping to clear and turn over the Jacaranda garden outside the classroom on Wednesday morning. There are plans to lay stepping stones for the children to walk around the plants for weeding and watering.
When you look at the Jacaranda calendar just inside the main door to the classroom, please note that parent volunteers are welcome to join the classroom after 9 am Monday-Friday, to help with a particular activity/reading to a small group/etc, after planning the activity with the Jacaranda teachers beforehand.
The Jacaranda class celebrated Dylan's third birthday on Tuesday morning. Thanks to her parents and grandparents for attending and thank you for the gift to the class of the book.
Please remember, next Wednesday the Sound of the Week begins with "C", as in carrot or cat. No toys, please, try to find real things from daily life. Cats are OK, for brief visits with supervision!
If you want to have a longer conversation with Ms. Leck, she is available for meetings on Wednesday afternoons. Please see the Jacaranda teachers for the sign up list. Remember, too, that Ms. Leck and the other teachers are available by phone during the afternoon or via email throughout the week.
When the children are dropped off at the classroom door instead of on the yard, they are given the opportunity to go straight to work, to sit quietly, to finish their breakfast, or any number of other things that they do to their own rhythm. Some choose to help set up the classroom, to prepare snack, or to go straight to work. You may notice that sometimes there are children working at tables or rugs, while others are in circle singing songs or listening to a story. This is part of the freedom of movement and of choices in the Montessori classroom.

JUNIPER
Juniper class celebrated another birthday! Claudia turned four years old and her mother came to class and made delicious fruit smoothies for everyone.
The morning drop-off is working great. Children are trickling into the classroom making for a smooth beginning to the day. Please remember, however, that class begins promptly at 8:45!
Thank you to Dashiell’s mother for coming to class and reading a wonderful story to the children. It is a good experience for the children to have guest readers in the classroom.
Heads up! The Book Fair and Family Fun Day are both coming soon. Look for flyers and announcements in the online newsletter for details!
The sound of the week for last week was “B”. We had a good collection of items starting with the “B” sound, including a beautiful blanket. The sound of the week for next week is “C”. If you have any interesting items starting with a “C” sound, please bring them in for the children to see.

LIVE OAK
“A child chooses what he needs to construct himself.” (Maria Montessori) “ It’s starting to look like a real Montessori class”. (Ms. Michel)
Our work this week has been very focused and deliberate. The children are beginning to really connect with the work at hand. No longer are we giving group lessons as reminders of how to use materials already known, but we linger into the unknown making old lessons brand new with exciting extensions and language.
As a whole group we are learning about the planets. While the younger children learn the names as they match the pictures, the older children are learning their order from the sun and how to read the names.
We are also continuing to learn the names of land and water forms and the classification of vertabrate/invertrabrate.
Wednesday is the day we do “Sound of the Week”. Please help your child find an object and bring it on Monday or Tuesday so we can all share a bounty of sounds.
Mr. Hoffman came for music on Wednesday and introduced the children to the guitar and making music with your body.
During the afternoons the children are listening to and enjoying "The Secret Garden".
Ms. Owens comes once a week and does an art project with the children.
Our class would like to begin our garden as soon as possible. Does anyone have some child-size gloves or tools to donate? Would any one like to volunteer some time to assist the children in this endeavor? Morning time would be best. Email and let me know.
We want you to know that Ms. Michel is going to be married the second weekend in October and her name is going to change. She will be called Ms. Cebulski. We wish her a great wedding day and a blessed marriage.

MAGNOLIA
It has been a very busy week in the Magnolia classroom.
Elena Gilbertson Hall celebrated her 3rd Birthday with us. Ms. Olivares read the book that she gave to the class while the children ate a yummy bagel snack. The book is an Africa folktale titled "Honey, Honey Lion" retold and illustrated by Jan Brett. Congratulations to the Eisentrat family who welcomed a new baby boy named Nicolas into their family. Eva shared some pictures of her new brother to the class and we all enjoyed a special snack of pears and alphabet cookies to celebrate. We had our first visit from Mr. Hoffmann this week and the children were all very excited to see him and sing some old favorite songs. A big thank you to Heather Hood, Cooper’s mom, for completing the Magnolia contact information, which is going to be one of the key tools in keeping us all informed about the happenings at GLM and in Magnolia.

GINKGO
Since the beginning of the year, the children have started their day by entering the class upon arrival, instead of being on the yard until 9 am. They're now able to help teachers set-up the classroom for the day. This gives the children true ownership of their environment.
Last week, on September 13, we had a birthday circle for Ruby Moon who is now three years old! Ruby's mom, Felix Thomson, brought pictures and oatmeal cookies for the class.
On September 22, we had a birthday circle for Lou Whitaker who is now three years-old! He brought in pictures and oatmeal cookies also.
We are continuing our study of the solar system. The topic this week: Gravity.
Mr. Hoffman, the music man, is back! The children enjoyed singing old and new songs with him.
On September 21, Aiden Conry-Murray's baby brother, Samuel Finnegan, was born. Aiden's grandmother, Anne Conry, came to the classroom to talk with the class about it. She read a story titled "I'm a Big Brother!" and shared a special snack with the children.

CAMELLIA
We have started serving tea at 5 o'clock outside, and the children really enjoy it. Many thanks to Zayda, Logan's mom, for adding the new dessert saucers to our tea service. We are looking for a tablecloth that will make our tea time an even more enjoyable and elegant close to the day. If you have a tablecloth to donate please see Ms. Edington.
We had our first Camellia birthday on Tuesday, Sept.20, for Leo Greenblatt. Thank you Cathy for bringing in a healthy snack of fruit salad and oatmeal-raisin bars. Thank you, Leo, for the book for the class, "Things That Go". Books are always a welcome addition to the classroom.
Camellia picture day is on Thursday, Sept.29 at 9:00a.m. Please be on time so we can have a class picture taken together.
Thank you to the parents who encouraged their children to bring something for the Sound of the Week. This week it was "B" and we learned about Book, Brush, Banana, and more! Next week’s sound is "C".
Reminder: Class starts at 8:45 a.m. If you are late please ask a teacher to help your child. Also, please try not to walk across the classroom. Use the kitchen door for exit and entrance so the children aren’t distracted. Thank you.

MULBERRY
This week the class started decorating our box for the Book Fair. The children took turns painting with tempera paint. Each class is decorating a box to be used for their book wish lists.
We've been spending much more time inside the classroom. If you drop-off inside, or come inside while class is going on, we ask that you be respectful of children working by not walking through the classrooms. You can enter and exit through the back door or kitchen door. Please do not use the Camellia door. Jacket and sweater weather is here and as the day warms up children take off their jackets and sweaters, so please make sure they are labeled.
Thursday, Mr. Hoffman began music with the children. He comes during lunch to play the guitar and sing to the children. This week he sang one of the children’s favorite songs, “Old MacDonald”.
Song of the week:
Three little monkeys swinging in a tree, teasing Mister Alligator, "You can't catch me! You can't catch me!”
Along comes Mister Alligator just as quiet as can be, and snapped that monkey right out of the tree.
Two little monkeys.........
