COXSACKIE DISEASE
GLM has had a number of children diagnosed with Coxsackie (a viral illness also called Hand, Foot and Mouth disease) over the past 2 weeks. The Brown Cottage and the Lake Park classes have been hardest hit. The onset is 3 to 6 days after exposure. It has many viral symptoms: fever, sores in mouth, stomach and intestinal upsets, cold symptoms. There may be blisters on the palms of hands. Once symptoms disappear the child can return to school, but the virus can persist for several weeks. If a child has oozing sores on hands, or is drooling with lesions in mouth, he/she may not return. Also spread through fecal matter as well. Emphasis on washing hands frequently throughout the day, cleaning shared surfaces and objects.
GLM is required to inform Licensing of any disease affecting 2 or more children in the school. The information submitted includes the childrens’ and parents’ names and home phone, approximate date of diagnosis, and which class and age group the children are in.

SINCERE NITONDE
Due to a death in her family Sincere Nitonde has taken emergency bereavement leave since Tuesday. She is out of the state. Faye Owens is acting Site Director at Lake Park. She is teaching in Ginkgo and doing special art projects.
GLM staff all extend their condolences and thoughts to Ms. Nitonde during this sad time.

PARENT SURVEY
Please be sure to turn in the Parent Survey that was passed out last week. Thank you!

CLASS NEWS

REDWOOD (ELEMENTARY)
The elementary children did a great job on Monday with their recorders and songs! They have been working very hard on their recorder lessons and I am very proud of them. Thank you to ALL of the parents, grandparents, aunts, and uncles who came. Your support is fantastic.
This week the second years have been further studying the parts and function of woody stems. There are three main parts to a woody stem: phloem (part that brings water to the leaves from the roots), cambium (the part that helps new rings to grow), and the xylem (the part that brings the food from the leaves to the other parts of the plant). Angelina stated as we were doing the lesson, "Woody stems are just like the composition of the earth. The earth has the hot lava, then the hard rocks, and then the atmosphere." Yes! It is exciting to hear the children bring up past lessons and compare the various subjects!
The third years have been busy writing a story that takes place during the Renaissance. They began with the development of their character and then they drew an illustration of the character. Now they are working on the development of the plot. They have also begun to study the Renaissance artist Michelangelo.
The fourth years are classifying and studying seeds. We have been looking at edible seeds and tasting various ones. They have also begun to study the counties of California.
The sixth years are working on kinetic and potential energy. They have developed a new saying with this lesson as well. When someone in our class has a not-so-great attitude they say, "Hey, you have potential positive energy!"
Have a wonderful vacation! See you in the New Year!

JACARANDA
The Jacaranda class has been reading books from the different winter traditions: Kwanzaa, Hanukah, Christmas, and Solstice. We talk about how bringing light and greenery indoors during these short days is a common theme in all of the traditions.
Thank you to those who have joined the children in the Jacaranda classroom in the last week:
Luna's mom, Rachel, for sharing stories, history and songs of Hanukah as well as beautiful Menorah which Luna made herself.
Carolyn and Mark, Gavin's parents, for helping the children make the parent gifts.
Laura, Camille's mom, for providing the materials for the classroom greenery for the sing-a-long night and for bringing mistletoe to the classroom. The children loved creating centerpieces for our holiday tables.
Children brought mittens, monkey, mask, Maria Montessori photo, mango, menorah, and metal inset to the Sound of the Week rug on Wednesday.
Remember that the children set up, eat with and clean up real dishes, silverware and glasses during lunch, building their coordination, focus and other abilities as they use (breakable!) dishes and glasses every day.
We hope everyone enjoyed the holiday gathering in the church auditorium last week. If you have any feedback on the event for next year's planning, please feel free to share with Jacaranda teachers and other staff by email or otherwise.
Thank you for all of your support this year! We wish all of Jacaranda families happy holidays and a great New Year.

JUNIPER
Chinese Lessons are a Hit!
The Juniper children are discovering the joy of learning Chinese! More and more children are asking for lessons in the language and Ms. Yang is happily giving them.
Clothes Bags
Please empty your child's clothing bag before the holiday (leave the empty bag at school) and bring new clothes when the children return after the New Year.
Happy Holidays from all of the Juniper teachers and we'll see you in 2006!

LIVE OAK
Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukah, Happy Kwanzaa, Happy Winter Holiday, Happy Solstice! The children have had a lot of fun learning about and hearing the stories of different religions and cultures and how we all celebrate something at this time of year.
Getting together to sing was so much fun. Next year it will be even better as we continue a new tradition. Thanks to everyone for participating. We hope your holiday is safe and happy. We look forward to our quiet season in the classroom now……a great time to observe. See you all in January 2006!

GINKGO
We hope everyone enjoyed the Holiday Sing-a-long and receptions!
The children greatly enjoyed singing to their families. Thank you so much for attending, and a special thank you to parents who brought treats and helped clean up.
We want to welcome a new member to our Ginkgo family, Jake. We had a 3rd birthday celebration on Friday for him. His family brought in gingerbread cookies to share with the class. Thank you!
We wish everyone a happy holiday season and a happy New Year.

MAGNOLIA
What a busy and fun week we have been having in the Magnolia classroom. Monday was spent getting ready for the performance and party. The children made some food as well as making festive tablecloths and paper chains to decorate the room. We also had an all-school dress rehearsal in preparation for the main event. It was truly wonderful to see the children perform and socialize afterward as a class! Thank you everyone.
A big thank to Kendra Collins and Warren Hogg for coming in to the class to help with the paper wreath project. The children enjoyed sprinkling paper and glitter to make the beautiful wreaths.
Babies, babies and more babies! Congratulations to the O'Leary-Herreras family on their new addition; Connor has a baby sister, Lucy. Another congratulations to the Dellis family who added a baby boy this week named Benjamin to their family!

MULBERRY
Mulberry class has had a busy week, and it’s good to have everyone back. The sing-a-long was a success but a little overwhelming. We never imagined so many people would show up! Thank you to all of the parents who helped set up and who brought delicious food and drinks to share. The children made wreaths during the day to hang in the windows for decorations for our reception. On Wednesday Erin, Vanessa, and Tracy came in and helped the children decorate gingerbread cookies and make a big paper chain. We hung the chain in the classroom and ate the cookies. We are keeping busy working on holiday gifts for our parents, and reading lots of holiday books and singing songs.
When we come back from the holidays we will begin our new cloth diaper program. We will send out a letter that explains in detail how the program will work.
Song of the week:
I have a little dreidel, I made it out of clay.
And when it’s dry and ready, with my dreidel I will play.
Oh dreidel, dreidel, dreidel,
Oh little top that spins.
The children all are happy when Hanukah begins.

CAMELLIA
Wow! December is buzzing by very quickly! We just celebrated our school sing-a-long and it was a big hit. All the children sounded wonderful. Thank you to all the families who helped set up and clean up with our reception, and to everyone who contributed tasty treats!
We're reading lots of holiday books: "Snowman At Christmas" by Carolyn Buehner, "The Christmas Hat" by A.J. Wood, and "Eight Days of Hanukkah" by Harriet Ziefert.
Parents - please feel free to come in and share a book or a project with the children. You could also come and share your family heritage.
Remember that CLASS STARTS AT 8:45 a.m. Please try to be on time.
There is no Sound of the Week until January 4, and it will be ”N”.
