SCHOOL CLOSED FOR INSERVICE AND M.L.K., JR. BIRTHDAY

School is closed Friday, Jan. 13 for an all-staff inservice, and closed again on Monday, Jan. 16 in observation of Martin Luther King, Jr.’s birthday. There will be no childcare.

WINTER HOLIDAY RENOVATIONS
New Pergo flooring was installed in the Brown Cottage “Mural” room along with some brightly painted trim. The diaper changing room has been plastered and painted.
In the Lake Park campus we now have 4 renovated closets for curriculum storage, and added art shelves for All Day Montessori.
Shatterproof window film was applied to windows in Jacaranda and Juniper.
In the elementary classroom double-paned windows have been installed, new linoleum has been laid in the side room, the climbing structure sports new posts, and when the weather permits, the exterior will get a new coat of paint.

CLASSROOM PETS

The teachers appreciate the gesture when a family wishes to give a class a new animal; however, GLM is implementing a new policy that requires Helen Campbell’s approval prior to any animal being added to a classroom. Thank you for your cooperation and understanding.

SOUND OF THE WEEK
Each Wednesday your child is encouraged, with your help, to find an object at home (preferably not a toy) that contains with the sound of the week. Put it in a labeled bag to share with your child’s class. The sound for next week is “O”, as in Odor, Olympic, and Obey.

NANNY SHARE AVAILABLE
Do you need childcare for the younger sibling of your GLM student? I have a wonderful nanny that cares for my 9 month old son at our home just around the corner from GLM. If you have a child similar in age and need full or part-time (at least 25 hours/week) care contact Joanna Sapir through the office or the Jacaranda class.

ELEMENTARY COAT DRIVE
“Dear GLM Parents,
The elementary class is having a Coat Drive. Please gather all your old coats or any coats you don’t wear. The coats will be going to the Covenant House, please give generously. The Covenant House is where people go when they are homeless. The Coat Drive will be held January 11th and 12th.
Thank you.”
(Written by the elementary class)
Bins will be located at each campus area for your donation. Children’s coats are in great need.

PARENT SURVEY
Please be sure to turn in the Parent Survey that was passed out in December. Thank you!

CLASS NEWS

REDWOOD (ELEMENTARY)
I hope everyone had a wonderful break! The weather was very fascinating and it has reflected what some of the children have been focusing on in their geography studies. It's nice to have the weather be in sync with our lessons. However, we are happy there has been a break and we can do a library trip this week. We are also happy there is a break in the storms so that the people who were affected by the flooding can have a chance to clean up!
Before the break our class had a wonderful cheese fondue party with the older primary children. It was great to see all of the children eating and conversing with one another. We also made collages with them and enjoyed some outdoor time. The children all had a really good time. Lucia and Jeremy were so excited they both asked, "Ms. Rankins, when can we come back?" The elementary children were delighted to show the older primary children their classroom and to get to know them better. We took lots of pictures...they will be available next week.
Brea, Eric, and Clare have been busy this week with their classroom work and planning the “One Warm Coat” drive. They have begun to hang up their posters and type a letter to parents letting them know when and where the collections will happen. The coat collection will take place from 7-6 with the children collecting the coats from 8-9 in both drop-off locations. When the children are not available to collect the coats, there will be containers labeled One Warm Coat. The containers will be located in Lake Park, outside Jacaranda/Juniper, in the Brown Cottage, and in Pinewood. We are really hoping to collect many, many coats to donate to Covenant House here in Oakland. They are really in need of children's coats. So please ask family and friends if they may have coats to donate.
Kai and Angelina are also starting to plan the Pennies for Patients drive. Please begin collecting your pennies. The Pennies for Patients event begins in February and runs through the end of March.
The after-care program made a marvelous paper quilt that is displayed in the hallway of Pinewood. Please come by and take a look at it!
Over the break we had some work done in our classroom. We have great, bright, new linoleum in our side room! We also have two more new windows. It is nice and sunny in our room and the windows are great for blocking the outdoor noise. The children are thrilled with the improvements. They almost don't want to use the side room because they feel that the new floor is too pretty to walk on!

JACARANDA
Welcome back to school after the holiday break. We hope that everyone is refreshed and ready to begin the new year together.
Remember, the upcoming In-Service Day on January 13, 2006. School will be closed.
Next Thursday evening, 7-8:30 pm, parents of children of all ages, are invited to a Montessori third-year or Kindergarten information night at Grand Lake Montessori. There will be a keynote speaker, Ginni Sackett, a teacher-trainer from Portland speaking at 7 pm. Afterwards, head teachers of each primary class will be presenting materials and answering questions. Bring your questions and yourselves next Thursday evening.
The Jacaranda teachers are looking for a volunteer(s) to finish a project that involves attaching photos to cards and laminating the cards for the children to use in the classroom. Please see Ms. Leck or Mr. Keating for more information.
We celebrate Kayden's fifth birthday this week. Happy Birthday, Kayden! And also Mrs. Saleem’s - Happy Birthday, Mrs. Saleem! Those who want to give a donation to Mrs. Saleem's country, Pakistan, can ask the teachers about Action for Hunger for Pakistan aid, to provide for water, sanitation and food needs.

JUNIPER
Happy New Year to all. The children have grown in height, knowledge, and maturity. We look forward to 2006!
Please welcome our newest student, Jake Cota, from the Camellia Class (Gaby's brother).
Calling all primary parents and parents who like to hear about the 3rd year in the Montessori Classroom (Kindergarten). Be sure to join us on Thursday Jan. 12, 2006, from 7:00 - 8:30 p.m for lots of valuable information.
"If there is right in the soul, there will beauty in the person. If there is beauty in the person, there will be harmony in the home. If there is harmony in the home, there will be peace in the world.” -Chinese Proverb-

LIVE OAK
Welcome back everyone. Live Oak is happy and working once again. Charlie has a new aquarium and is very happy to be able to move around. We will soon have a new Mrs. Finch to join our widow Mr. Finch. This week the children are learning the names and stories of dinosaurs. This month we are focusing on South America. I urge all of you to attend our Kindergarten orientation evening. It will be very informative and fun. I would like to have some volunteers for gardening. The children all seem happy to be back and are eager to have new lessons as well as revisit the things they know. I look forward to the slower pace of winter and wish all of you a great new year.

GINKGO
Happy New Year’s everyone and welcome back! We hope everyone had a great time during the break.
We have a new child in our classroom, Gigi Curry. Gigi started on Tuesday of this week.
Our bird "Sunshine" passed away on Monday. The children were very sad and wrote letters and drew pictures.
Sound of the week: The children brought a lot of different items for the sound "N". Children that didn't bring sound of the week did a great job naming words with the beginning sound "N".
We talked in a group about feelings. The main topic was 'angry'. The children made angry faces and talked about things that people may do when they feel angry. We ended by saying that it is ok to feel angry, but what do you do when you have this emotion? We talked about what makes us angry and if we're too mad to discuss it at the time, walk away until you're ready.

MAGNOLIA
Welcome back everyone! We hope all of you had a wonderful and peaceful holiday. All of the Magnolia teachers would like to take the time to thank you for all of the heartfelt holiday gifts we received. They are greatly appreciated.
A big thank you to Isaiah Lenoue. He gave our class a beautiful book about music as a Hanukah present. He also shared with us a yummy snack of banana muffins.
A big happy 4th birthday to Eva Eisentraut. She also shared a bagel snack with us. Thank you!

MULBERRY
Our first week back after the holidays has been a good one. On Monday Emily Fenster and Tracey Carter, Ella's parents, came in and celebrated Hanukah with the class. We read a story about Hanukah, lit the Menorah, ate latkes and played with dreidels. Later in the morning Josie and her parents stopped by to say good-bye. We wish them well!
The cloth diaper service has been set up with Tiny Tots. If parents are interested in using the same service at home you can go online to get a $6.00 a month discount because the school has signed up. Thank you to Katie Barnes for volunteering to wash the diaper wraps weekly for the Brown Cottage.
I would like to welcome Marti Arana-Beitz and his parents Veronica and Pamela to the Mulberry class.
Song of the week:
One bunny rabbit went out to play
all in a vegetable patch one day.
He had such enormous fun
he asked another bunny rabbit to come.
Two bunny rabbits went out to play
all in a vegetable patch one day.
They had such enormous fun
They asked another bunny rabbit to come.
(and so on up to five when they played all day until they were done).
While we sing the song the children hop like bunnies.

CAMELLIA
Welcome back! We hope everyone had a wonderful holiday and New Year’s.
It has been very cold lately so please dress your child with an extra layer. Remember to label EVERYTHING (shoes, raingear, jackets, etc).
We’ve had a very busy first week of 2006. In practical life they're working on pouring liquid from one cup to another and spooning items from one bowl to another. One child did the pink tower at least four times, arranging from smallest block to biggest on the rug!
Sound of the Week was "N". We had Nickels, Napkins, Necklace, and chicken Nuggets. Please continue to encourage your child to bring something to share. Next week the sound is "O".
If you have a favorite book or fun project to share with our class please let Mr. Tien know.
