CALLING FOR DONATIONS – LARGE & SMALL
Yes, GLM parents, we need your help! GLM families are the greatest resource for donations for our auctions and raffles - from restaurant gift certificates, sporting and cultural event tickets, to weekend cabins and cruises!!
Perhaps you have a great piece of artwork that no longer fits with your decor, or a brand new barbecue you've never used? Do you work in the travel, wine or retail industry? Do you work for a company that might donate a product or service?
Let's make 2006 the best fundraising effort yet! Donor forms are available in the office - you can mail or bring your item to the office, and we'll take it from there.
Questions about donations? Contact Marni Hunter (marnihunter@sbcglobal.net) or Heidi Hudson (hudsonlaw@mac.com). You can also call Marni at 510-339-6082, or Heidi at 510-261-4729.
It may seem like a long way off - but the Wine & Cheese Tasting and Auction is just around the corner. Mark your calendars!

SOUND OF THE WEEK Each Wednesday your child is encouraged, with your help, to find an object at home (preferably not a toy) that contains with the sound of the week. Put it in a labeled bag to share with your child’s class. The sound for next week is “R”, as in Rabbit, River, and Rake.

FINANCIAL AID
Financial aid information and procedures were passed out to all families in December. For re-enrolling families the deadline for submitting a Parent’s Financial Statement (PFS) to retain your child’s space in the school is 2/1/06 – no exceptions. The original PFS is to be mailed to the School and Student Service for Financial Aid, and a copy of the PFS must be delivered to Nancy Haskins, director of Financial Aid at GLM by 2/1/06. Please see the information passed out for details. If you need the procedures/info, please contact either of the school’s offices.

RE-ENROLLMENT CONTRACTS ARE ALSO DUE
Feb. 1 with your tuition deposit.

TUFF TUMBLERS
New Tuff Tumbler classes begin on Feb. 1st & 17th. Registration forms are in the classrooms and both offices. Please be reminded that we may not be able put your child in a particular class as scheduling is based on first come-first served, and according to age and skill level. If you turned a check only in to the office you must still complete a registration form. CLASSES FILL UP VERY QUICKLY.

THANK YOU
Thank you to the following parents for placing orders with Montessori Services: Richard Meyers, Stephanie Schreiber, and Karen Hall. By placing orders they contributed to a school credit with Montessori Services. Thank you!

CLASS NEWS

REDWOOD (ELEMENTARY)

The elementary children did an amazing job selling raffle tickets on Saturday for the Crab Feed. We sold the tickets at Farmer's Market, Ace Hardware, and Starbuck's at the Rockridge shopping center on Saturday, from 10-2. They worked really well together and had a lot of fun! Thank you to all of the parents who also helped in the effort. I am really proud of the children for giving up their free time on a Saturday do this.
This week the second years made collages experimenting with various mediums and textures with Ms. Van Nest. They collected items from nature and from around our kitchen. They are beginning to look great! The second years also spent some time outside searching for and sketching different types of plant buds.
The third and fourth years are continuing to work on drawing 3 dimensions using a horizon line. The third years are also working on the different types of angles, while the fourth years are studying the area of polygons (many sided figures).
The sixth years are working on realistic drawing. They are also doing research about how a bill becomes law. Another thing they have been working on is coming up with rules for judging, in honor of our Supreme Court.
In our Second Step meetings we have been discussing how to avoid a verbal altercation and control our anger. The children have been trying to follow the steps to avoid acting on their anger with one another (Step 1: Take a deep breath. Step 2: Count backwards. Step 3: Think out loud about what your options are in solving the problem. Step 4: Give an “I feel…” message to the person. Step 5: Offer a solution.).
This week Senora Robinson told the children a story in Spanish. She then asked them questions about the story in Spanish. They did really well! The children are also working with the verbs: Ilegar-to arrive, correr-to run, and ir-to go.
With Mr. Hoffman this week this week they practiced singing the scales and the correct music notes for the scales. The children sounded wonderful!

JACARANDA
Get well to the several children and families who are fighting the bugs that are being passed around, and especially to Andrew Tillin, Leila's dad, who was in a serious bicycle accident.
The flower bulbs that the children planted last month have begun to shoot upwards in this spring-like weather, and we look forward to the blossoms in the coming weeks .
While Ms. Leck reads about the parts of the body and those parts' functions, a discussion follows: how the brain sends messages through the spinal cord to the hand, or another part of the body, and how this is a part of self control, to follow the messages coming from your brain. One child says, thoughtfully, "That's interesting." Another day, the children found "Holes in Your Nose" deliriously funny, which is a teaching opportunity to remind those who are laughing to remember the friends who are trying to listen to the story.
Flags of South America have rotated to replace the Flags of North America on the Cultural shelf. Always on the shelf are the flags of South Africa, Pakistan and the United States; the countries of Ms. Leck, Mrs. Saleem and Mr. Keating, respectively.
The older children who do not nap in the afternoon have been enjoying the tea work, which usually is placed on the shelf in January each year. There are many steps involved: tray to table, water to pot, bag to pot, steeping, pouring, serving friends, then cleanup. The work is usually lovingly cleaned up to make it ready for the next person.
Children really like to clean: besides the tea work, they love to clean up the work they have been using, whether it is a simple pouring work, to polishing brass or polishing a table and chairs with lemon oil, to scrubbing tables with soap and brushes. Set them up for success at home, too: everything they need to complete the work from beginning to end, easily accessible, with clear expectations. This is what they thrive on and expect.

JUNIPER
The children are enjoying the many cultural experiences made available to them by the diverse community here at GLM. Ms. Yang has been doing many Lunar New Year activities with them during the last couple weeks and the children have been very interested. But it's not just teachers participating. Parents and even grandparents have been sharing their cultures and hobbies as well. Recently, one of the Juniper children's grandparents came to class and shared her passion for quilts with the children. They learned about different kinds of quilts, the parts of a quilt and how they are made. All members of the GLM community are invited and encouraged to share their cultures, hobbies and passions with the children!

GINKGO
We had a great time celebrating Elene’s birthday this week. Her dad brought in a special treat for the class and pictures of Elene. She turned 4 years old.
Last Friday we celebrated Olivia birthday. Olivia turned 5 years old! Olivia's mom and dad came and also brought in a special treat, pictures of Olivia and a gift for the class. Thank you for the beautiful plant! We decided to put it at the entrance of the classroom.
Sound of the week: the children, each week, get so excited about it! This week's sound was "Q". Some children brought in items from home including Quarters and Queen. Reminder: the children no longer have cubbies, they have files. Sometimes the files get full. Please remember to check your child's file daily. The children sometimes forget to empty it out at the end of the day.
We hope every family has a great weekend. Don’t forget - the Crab Feast is tomorrow!

LIVE OAK
Hello everyone. I have a funny story to share. See if you know who you are. Two Live Oak girls were pretending to be their mommies on the playground. They were driving side by side and talking. One says to the other, ”I must hurry home to make the dinner.” The other child responds, “Not me, I have to drive through Starbucks!”
I know all of you are thinking about how to get your volunteer hours in before the end of the year. I have some ideas for you. Tina Manuel could probably use help with material making. It will greatly benefit the classrooms if we could have them done by the end of the year. I am looking for someone who can sew simple drawstring bags. They are going to be for next year to hold the children’s extra clothes. We will supply the fabric.
We could use volunteers to help children make their Valentine bags. Since we are studying Africa in February we would love any stories or cultural ideas you may have to enrich our study. I would also love some of you to come and garden with the children. This could be done just one hour a week and could be in the afternoon as well as the first thing in the morning. And if you are really interested, I would love someone to come and help me organize the Live Oak library.
My next PNO (Parents Night Out) will be Saturday, February 11. The children really have a great time hanging out together and goofing off. Please join the fun.

MAGNOLIA
A big welcome to Jack Anderson who has been visiting Magnolia from the Brown Cottage. He will be an official member of the Magnolia class next week.
We had two birthday celebrations this week. Happy Birthday to Connor O'Leary-Herreras who turned three this week. He made some yummy blueberry muffins for his friends. Kaelen Osta-Smith also turned three this week. She shared some bagels with us.
Mr. Moody has resumed his music/movement sessions with us. The children had a lot of fun learning some new songs and dances.http://www.blogger.com/img/gl.italic.gif
Carter Hiett brought some lemons from his tree. The children extracted the lemon juice on Tuesday morning and we made tasty lemonade that afternoon.

MULBERRY

The Mulberry class has really been enjoying the nice weather. The children helped Mrs. Aima put together a new basketball hoop and have been shooting baskets all week. They have also been drawing on the wall with chalk so our yard has become more colorful. In the classroom they are matching animal cards. The child has a small picture of an animal and has to walk around the room to find the large picture that matches it. The children love this activity. If anyone has old calendars with nice pictures that they would like to donate, we could make more cards.
This week our song of the week is from one of our new books. The children have been requesting the book daily.
Song of the week:
This little light of mine, I'm gonna let it shine.
This little light of mine, I'm gonna let it shine.
This little light of mine, I'm gonna let it shine.
Let it shine, let it shine, let it shine.

CAMELLIA
Thanks to the parents who have spent time in the classroom this week. On Tuesday Isa's mom, Katya, spent the morning reading books to the class. Wednesday afternoon Logan's mom, Zayda, served sandwiches, cookies and scones for early afternoon tea and read books Thursday morning. All the children enjoy the visitors!
The sound of the week was “Q”, and Ethan's mom, Stella, sent Quesadillas to share with the class. Thank you!
Just a reminder to parents that drop off is 8:30AM to 8:45AM.
Hope to see you all at the Crab Feed on Saturday!
