SOUND OF THE WEEK Each Wednesday your child is encouraged, with your help, to find an object at home (preferably not a toy) that contains with the sound of the week. Put it in a labeled bag to share with your child’s class. The sound for next week is “V”, as in Victory, Vitamin, and Valet.

MINI-BOOK FAIR MARCH 22
GLM is pleased to announce a mini-book fair starring David M. Schwartz. Mr. Schwartz has been delighting children for over 20 years with his whimsical tales involving science and nature. His first book, “How Much is a Million”, was first published in 1985, and he has written nearly 50 other books since then, including “G is for Googol”, which won several awards. Please join us in the elementary building from 3 to 5 pm to meet Mr. Schwartz and peruse his numerous titles.

TAKE A BREAK

Volunteers are needed to help with the lunch on Fridays, between 10:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. Please call the school office if you would like to help, 510-836-4313.
Forms for the Friday lunch program covering March and April have been distributed to all Parent Pockets/Cubbies (there are additional forms in each classroom and office). It is a good idea to mark the dates you’ve signed your child up for on your calendar at home.

CLASS NEWS

REDWOOD (ELEMENTARY)

The elementary children have had a great week...considering we all just got back from a week long break! The children are back and have jumped right into the swing of things!
The third year’s butterfly garden is here and the caterpillars arrived this week. They need to stay in their sterile environment for 7-9 days. We then move them into their butterfly habitat. We have decided that we will leave them in the habitat after their metamorphosis until it is warm enough for them to be released.
The second years have begun to study the continent of Africa! They are officially finished with South America and are starting to learn the names of the countries of the northern region of Africa.
The fourth years have been completing a mysteries composition since they have finished their study of mystery stories. It will be exciting to hear their finished products!
The sixth years have completed their work on Motion, Forces, and Energy. They are now going to be working on Electricity and Magnetism.
This week the aftercare wrote group stories together. They turned out really funny! Next week they will be hanging them up in the hallway. Please come by and check them out.
We need a driver for the “People Like Me” field trip at the Holy Names College. If you are interested in driving, please let Mariana know (good way to get Parent Participation Hours!).

JACARANDA
Welcome back to those who were away during the break last week. The children who were gone and the children who spent the week in the Juniper classroom all returned to Jacaranda with energy and interest in the work and each other.
During the month of March we will welcome Spring, we will celebrate St. Patrick’s Day and Purim, the Jewish holiday. We welcome any families who would like to help the class celebrate these holidays.
Laura Lorenz will help the class begin the Jacaranda auction project next week. If you are interested in assisting, please contact Laura or the Jacaranda teachers.
This week the class read a book on how blood in our body carries oxygen, how white cells eat germs and how blood cells help heal the body.
The Jacaranda class also used a fall as a teaching opportunity; practicing bumping into someone, how to say sorry, and showing concern by offering to bring your “injured” friend an ice pack.

JUNIPER
Welcome back to all those who had a wonderful winter vacation. We had a great time here at GLM during the break. The children co-mingled, met new teachers and friends, and just generally had fun playing, laughing, and running around together.
We are planning to continue combining with the Lake Park children because we are one school community, working and playing together.
Nacalah, age 8, from the Redwood class (elementary), has been reading to us for the past three Mondays. This week she shared the story "Wake Up Mama" by Eileen Christelow. Nacalah said she likes reading to the children because they listen to her and it improves her reading. Big thanks go out to Nacalah!
On Tuesday we had a visit from Sergeant Cota (Gaby and Jake's dad). He shared safety information with the children such as the importance of wearing your seat belt in the car or staying in the car seat, always crossing the street in the crosswalk, never opening the door or answering the phone without a parent, and never taking candy from a stranger. He also emphasized how important it is for children to know their first and last names, home address and phone number in case they need to communicate these things to a police officer during an emergency. Each child received a coloring book, sticker, tattoo, and a magnet. Thank you, very much, to Sergeant Cota.
"Where, after all, do universal human rights begin? In small places, close to home - so close and so small that they cannot be seen on any maps of the world. Unless these rights have meaning there, they have little meaning anywhere." - Eleanor Roosevelt

GINKGO
We hope everyone had a great winter break.
The children had group discussion about how it makes other people feel when you take an object away. For example let's say that I'm playing with a ball and a boy named Tom comes along and takes it. The children put themselves in my place and expressed how they would feel - sad, mad, etc. Then the question was asked, "How would you solve this problem?" The first thing we have to do is calm down. Then we would need to express our feelings to the other person. The children gave wonderful feedback! Some children said they would suggest a game they could play together. Others said they would tell the other child to find his own ball to play with. We did agree that grabbing the ball back would not solve the problem, and may even make it a bigger problem. It was also said that if talking to the other child doesn't work, ask an adult to intervene.
Sound of the week was "U". The children brought in a lot of items. What the children enjoy most about Sound of the Week is seeing what their fellow classmates bring!.
Please remember to check your Parent File frequently for important correspondence from teachers and the office.
Have a good weekend.

LIVE OAK
The Live Oak class was extremely busy this week. The children were excited to come back to class after the break and learn that a variety of new work was added to the shelves, the most popular being lemon squeezing. The children picked lemons from Ms. Campbell’s lemon tree, juiced them, and made lemonade.
They have been in good spirits this week and very talkative. Ariana Rukin informed Ms. Cebulski that she needs a haircut and Ariana’s mom would gladly be the one to do it.
Due to the rain, our class stayed in, danced a lot and sang rainy day songs. The children were extremely excited to see that the music teacher Mr. Hoffman had returned from his trip to Europe. Ms. Cebulski has been holding down the fort while Ms. Mac Donald has unfortunately been out sick this week. The class hopes she will be feeling better soon. Next week is “Birthday Week” in Live Oak for Lali Ghate, Vikram Branch, and Mark Manuel. The class looks forward to celebrating with them!

MAGNOLIA
Welcome back everyone, we hope you had a nice week off. A big, happy 5th Birthday to Zeke Idelson. After he took his five turns around the sun, he shared a yummy granola bar snack with us. He also gave our class a beautifully illustrated book about Rosa Parks. Thank you Zeke!
The children will be working on two auction projects this year. They will each paint and decorate a picture frame. The children are also hand painting a ceramic bread platter that will be our group art project. We started our individual auction art project on Wednesday. Thank you to Danielle Hayes for helping us out with it. Ms. Olivares is still taking volunteers for Tuesdays and Wednesdays in March, let her know when you can help and she will put you on the calendar.

MULBERRY
Our family tree in the classroom is missing a lot of family photos. If you haven’t brought in your picture please do so soon. The children love to talk about their families!
Reminder: The elementary students are sponsoring the Pennies for Patients fundraising drive to help children with cancer. Our coin box is in the classroom on top of the radio. Every penny counts!
As we continue to work on independence with the children I would like to encourage parents to provide children with shoes they can manipulate themselves. Hi-tops and boots are difficult for children to put on without assistance.
Also, a lot of children are using zipper bags in their lunches. Instead, please pack foods in small reusable containers that the children can unpack and open. Be sure to labels tops and bottoms of the containers (along with all clothing).
The children got a huge kick out of watching the hail come down the other day! We’ve been singing our rain song, and our list of things that get wet is growing! The words are:
It rained a mist, it rained a mist,
It rained a mist all over the (tables, tree, grandpa, bird, etc).
It rained a mist, it rained a mist,
It rained a mist all over the (tables, tree, grandpa, bird, etc).

CAMELLIA
An important reminder: GLM school is participating in the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society's Pennies for Patients fundraiser. Please bring any loose change you may find under the bed, in the sofa, under the back seat of your car. The fundraising ends the 1st week of April. So start looking! Also, every time someone donates 2 dollars or more a paper penny, which will feature the name of the family, will be hung up in the classroom. Thank you to the HUNTER FAMILY (Tyler Hunter) for their generous donation!
Budding teacher?: A child wandered around the classroom and asked the other children "Do you want a lesson on the Pink Tower?" Unfortunately, they all replied “No, thank you”.
Next week’s sound is "V" as in Violin, Vest, and Violet. Thank you again for encouraging your children to bring items to share with the class. Keep up the good work!
Did you know that most of our homes provide too much? Children respond to order in their environment. Many parents have told me that when they simplified the home environment and put away some of the toys, their children were noticeably calmer.
