CHINESE CLOWN CABARET PERFORMANCE
Wednesday, April 26, GLM presents a Chinese Clown Cabaret at 10 am in the Magnolia classroom. The performance stars Jane Chen and her real-life mom, Tair, for a ferociously silly hour of music and ridiculousness, “often rooted in a sly send-up of the kind of familial and cultural dynamics inherent in its mother-daughter team.”

WORK PARTY

Join us on Saturday, May 6th, for a work party at GLM, from 9 am – 2 pm. There are painting projects, emergency preparations, and gardening activities to do. Children welcome. Bagels and coffee served. The school year is nearly over – have you met your Parent Participation Hours? Contact the school office is you’d like to participate.

CONGRATULATIONS!
Congratulations are in order to Crystal Lee, GLM elementary student, winner of TWO GOLD MEDALS AND ONE SILVER MEDAL in Karate sparring in the JUNIOR OLYMPICS! The competition was this past weekend in Las Vegas. We are all so proud of her!
Congratulations also to Zachary Gamble, another elementary student, for earning his Purple Belt in Aikido this week!
What amazing students we have!

OPERA PHOTOS
Several people have asked about the opera photos, thinking they could be viewed on the opera DVD. They are not on the DVD, but can be seen and purchased at www.wallinstudios.com/opera-2005.html.

SOUND OF THE WEEK Each Wednesday your child is encouraged, with your help, to find an object at home (preferably not a toy) that contains with the sound of the week. Put it in a labeled bag to share with your child’s class. The sound for next week is “SN” as in SNack, SNicker, and SNow.

SUMMER MOTHER’S HELPER AVAILABLE

Tired of scrubbing your shower? Bored with sitting next to the shredder, feeding it secret documents? Not into kneeling in your yard, pulling weeds? Want to get a pedicure without your preschooler? Samantha Aima, 13 years old, is very responsible, a hard worker, and available this summer to do various household chores. Pay is negotiable. Please contact Mary Aima in the Brown Cottage if interested, 510-622-0258.

BOX TOPS COORDINATOR STILL NEEDED
Position entails the following:
· Encourage GLM families to cut out the Box Tops for Education coupons found on packages of General Mills cereals, Ziploc products, Betty Crocker and other food products from General Mills. And, NEW for 2006—Kimberly-Clark paper products such as Kleenex, Scott, Viva, and Cottonelle.
· Spread the word about the locations of coupon-collecting containers placed all around the GLM campus.
· Periodically collect the coupons, count them, and send them to General Mils. General Mills sends a check to our school twice a year! It’s CASH—not some kind of corporate scrip.
Additional, optional duties:
· Visit the classrooms and tell the kids about this way to raise money for our school. Visits could include showing the children pictures of the coupons, so they can make sure the coupons don’t end up in the recycling bin at home. Or perhaps, an art project such as a coupon collection envelope to stick on the refrigerator at home.
· Encourage use of the Box Tops for Education website (www.boxtops4education.com) as a starting point for online shopping, which would bring in additional money for our school.
· Boost the Box Tops Booster Club!
This volunteer job counts toward your Parent Participation Hours. The amount of time you put into it, and the scheduling of the hours, are very, very flexible.
Please contact Cindy Fressola for more information.

CLASS NEWS

REDWOOD (ELEMENTARY)

The elementary children had a great spring celebration. They decorated wooden eggs with acrylic paint, dyed hard boiled eggs, and then had an Easter egg hunt with plastic eggs on Friday before we left for vacation.
We also celebrated Kai's 8th birthday with her. She presented the class with a wonderful Peter's Map. The map is based on the work of German historian Arno Peters. The map is significant in that it allows the children to see the accurate size of the various continents, for example, the fact that Asia really should look like the largest continent, followed by Africa. It was very difficult for them to understand this concept before. We are very appreciative of this gift! Thank you to Kai and her family!
The children seem well rested from their spring break and are really enjoying the change in weather. Now that the weather has taken a turn for the better the children are able to take the small wooden tables out to our back deck and work outside. They take pleasure in this privilege and manage to get a lot of work completed.
We have also changed our classroom around a little bit...we have moved the computers in our room so that they are no longer the focal point of our classroom. So far it is working great!
In recorder, the children have been composing their own songs! They also have been learning the tunes to “Yankee Doodle Dandee” and “I Will Be Your Friend” by Guy Davidson.

JACARANDA
Welcome back to all those who took a little Spring break. We hope you are enjoying the Sun..... actually we KNOW you are enjoying the sun!! The Jacaranda children are especially happy being outside and they have been enjoying the new 'turf' otherwise known as the 'plastic grass'. It is soft, spongy and very green!
Mr. Keating has been out this week as his children have been sick. We hope they get better soon. Thank you to Ms. Mezzio who has been our faithful substitute. Thank you too to Ms Owens, our Art Teacher, for visiting our class on Thursday morning. She made beautiful framed drawings with the children.
We have started studying Africa and are enjoying the African artifacts on the Geography shelf, including a real crocodile head! We have also been talking about mammals and are beginning work on the Solar System.
Some of our Grace and Courtesy Lessons this week have included how to comfort a friend when they are sad, how to blow our noses and how to join a group.
A big, big thank you to Laura Lorenz for all her hard work on the Auction projects...they are beautiful! We look forward to seeing you at the Annual Cheese and Wine Auction on Saturday afternoon.

JUNIPER

Birthday celebrations for the children in Juniper are a wonderful chance to illustrate the earth's annual journey around the sun. To celebrate their special day, each birthday child is encouraged to bring a green light food and a gift to share with the class. This gives the child the experience of giving on their birthday as a complement to the tradition of receiving gifts. According to the Juniper children, we have had "The best birthday celebrations!" thanks to all of the parent’s efforts.
To all parents who volunteered throughout the year, thank you for supporting our mission, programs, and activities.

"The world is moved along, not only by the mighty shoves of its heroes, but also by the aggregate of the tiny pushes of each honest worker." - Helen Keller

GINKGO
The Ginkgo class is very excited by the arrival of spring. Sunny days have meant eating and playing outside again, and catching up after the weeklong spring break.
We have been extremely busy this week and the children have seemed especially focused on their work. With Ms. Mc Clindon gone, Ms. Cebulski has been a welcomed guest teacher. We have had some new lessons, movement activities, and music.
Thursday, Lucia's mother brought in the class project, which has been a long time in the making. The children were excited to see the beautiful finished product and posed for a picture with it. This afternoon, the children were also able to see the plates that they made for the auction. Ms. Mc Clindon will be back next week and will be officially a Mrs. As for Ms. Cebulski; now that she has become well known to the Ginkgo children she will have to come by for frequent visits!

LIVE OAK

It was a very busy week this week. On Monday we celebrated Ananda’s birthday. She is now four. On Tuesday we celebrated Lorenzo’s birthday. He also is now four. On Wednesday we celebrated Ms. MacDonald’s birthday. She is now older! It was great to share pictures of when we were all little and growing. Thank you for helping our celebrations be so wonderful. And thank you so much to the Bartalotti’s for donating Spikey (our new Siamese fighting fish) and the wonderful garden tools. On this note, please know that Live Oak classroom cannot except any more pets…….while we love them all, they are time consuming to care for everyday and our time really is limited and better spent with the children.
We hope you all are planning on attending the auction this Saturday. It will be a lot of fun to taste wine together and see each other outside of school.
May 6th is Family Work Day. Live Oak families are going to meet at the garden at 9:00 am for coffee and bagels…we will need tools for planting.
May is also our last month of continent study. We will be looking at Australia. Does anyone have any artwork, instruments or music from there? This will be our contribution to Earth Day, held here on campus sometime in May. It’s a great way to end the year.
Lastly, if you need parent hours let me know. I have a few things that could be done for the classroom. Thanks so much.

MAGNOLIA
Welcome back everyone. Spring has finally sprung and the weather has been beautiful. The children are spending more time outside. Please remember to apply sunscreen to your child before school. It is best to apply the sunscreen before your child gets dressed to insure that there is full coverage all over their bodies.
A huge thank you to all of the parent volunteers who helped out with our auction projects. They turned out very lovely!
The children all had a wonderful time at the egg hunt before the spring break. Thank you to everyone for helping us on that day
A big, happy third birthday to Camille Collins. We had a yummy snack of banana bread. She gave the Magnolia class a beautiful wooden box with a magnolia flower on the top and a book, "Make way for Ducklings", in Spanish. Thank you, Collins family!

MULBERRY

Welcome back from Spring Break. The children returned to sunshine, so we've been spending a lot of time outside. Reminder to parents to apply sunscreen in the morning and we will reapply during the day. Also, check your child’s extra clothing basket to make sure they have enough clothing. We will be engaging in lots of water works outside when it is warm and the children need a change of clothes.
The children finished their auction tee shirts this week so be sure to get your order in. They all turned out very nicely. A special thanks to the many parents who helped with both of our auction projects. And don't forget the auction is this Saturday, April 22, from 2 pm –7 pm. Hope to see you all there!
We had a busy Tuesday morning celebrating Easter. Thanks to the Camellia parents for helping with the festivities. There was face painting, egg dying, sticker work and a special snack: muffins, tea sandwiches, strawberries, pineapple and juice. When we were done with the activities we had an egg hunt.
Our play yard is almost ready for use. We are so excited about the new artificial turf. It looks great and feels good to the bare toes.
Song of the week: What's the weather like today, like today, like today? What's the weather like today? It is SUNNY!

CAMELLIA

Welcome back! Hopefully everyone had a wonderful Spring Break. All the children have settled back into their routines and are busy with their work (baby washing, Pink Tower, the Brown Stairs). Thank you to all the parents who came and helped with our Easter celebration. The children had a jolly of a time! They did face painting, egg dying, stamping work, and especially eating a wonderful snack of strawberries, pineapple, sandwiches, and muffins.
Remember, next week’s sound is "SN" as in snail, snake, and snow. Please continue to encourage your child to bring something in to share – they really enjoy it!
Yes! The sun is finally showing its face, and we are starting to apply sunscreen again. If your child uses a specific sunscreen please provide it and we will be happy to use it on your child.
A big reminder: this Saturday April is the school auction, from 2 pm to 7 pm. Please come and join us while we sip wine, nibble treats, and bid on great items!
We read a special book today called "I Love You, Stinky Face", written by Lisa McCourt and illustrated by Cyd Moore.
And again, parents, if you want to come and to do a project or read a story please let the Camellia staff know. Stories are always welcomed.
