WORK PARTY

Join us on Saturday, May 6th, for a work party at GLM, from 9 am – 2 pm. There are painting projects, emergency preparations, and gardening activities to do. Children welcome. Bagels and coffee served. The school year is nearly over – have you met your Parent Participation Hours? Contact the school office if you’d like to participate.

TAKE A BREAK HELP NEEDED
Parent volunteers are needed for the all the remaining Friday lunches of the school year, from 10:30 am to 1 pm. Need to wrap up your Parent Participation Hours? This is a fun and easy way to get those hours. Please contact the school office at 510-836-4313, or email: joanna@grandlakemontessori.com.
In addition, TAB sign-up forms for lunch have been distributed to Parent Pockets/Folders for May and June. There are extra forms in both offices and in the classrooms. Please use the form to sign your child up for the pizza lunch.

LAKE PARK FIRE ALARM

We had an impromptu fire drill this week in the Lake Park classes due to a possible short in the system. We have an electrician/alarm specialist looking at it and getting bids for replacement. Until then, there may be more surprise drills.

EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS

The office has received only 25 of the requested items (updated emergency form, photo and letter) for emergency preparedness. If you have not already done so, please submit the items by Friday, May 12, 2006.

SOUND OF THE WEEK Each Wednesday your child is encouraged, with your help, to find an object at home (preferably not a toy) that contains the sound of the week. Put it in a labeled bag to share with your child’s class. The sound for next week is BL” as in BLimp, BLonde, and BLotter.

SUMMER MOTHER’S HELPER AVAILABLE
Tired of scrubbing your shower? Bored with sitting next to the shredder, feeding it secret documents? Not into kneeling in your yard, pulling weeds? Want to get a pedicure without your preschooler? Samantha Aima, 13 years old, is very responsible, a hard worker, and available this summer to do various household chores. Pay is negotiable. Please contact Mary Aima in the Brown Cottage if interested, 510-622-0258.

BOX TOPS COORDINATOR STILL NEEDED
Position entails the following:
· Encourage GLM families to cut out the Box Tops for Education coupons found on packages of General Mills cereals, Ziploc products, Betty Crocker and other food products from General Mills. And, NEW for 2006—Kimberly-Clark paper products such as Kleenex, Scott, Viva, and Cottonelle.
· Spread the word about the locations of coupon-collecting containers placed all around the GLM campus.
· Periodically collect the coupons, count them, and send them to General Mills. General Mills sends a check to our school twice a year! It’s CASH—not some kind of corporate scrip.
Additional, optional duties:
· Visit the classrooms and tell the kids about this way to raise money for our school. Visits could include showing the children pictures of the coupons, so they can make sure the coupons don’t end up in the recycling bin at home. Or perhaps, an art project such as a coupon collection envelope to stick on the refrigerator at home.
· Encourage use of the Box Tops for Education website (www.boxtops4education.com) as a starting point for online shopping, which would bring in additional money for our school.
· Boost the Box Tops Booster Club!
This volunteer job counts toward your Parent Participation Hours. The amount of time you put into it, and the scheduling of the hours, are very, very flexible.
Please contact Cindy Fressola for more information.

CLASS NEWS

REDWOOD (ELEMENTARY)
The elementary children had a great time at the Hall of Health in Berkeley last week. Thank you to Sandra Klein for helping with the driving. The upper elementary were involved in a discussion entitled “Some Body!” Body image and diet were included in the discussion. The main points of the topic was to help the children understand that the images of women and men that they see in the media are not always realistic images; that healthy eating habits now need to be established; and that you cannot necessarily look at someone and know whether or not if they are overweight. The docent also stressed the fact that many diets eliminate entire food groups and that is an unhealthy way to try to loose weight. Eric learned that it’s OK to eat candy once in awhile but not all the time. Brea learned that the Snapple she likes to drink has about 2 cups of sugar per drink! So she has decided to drink only half a Snapple at a time! The younger children enjoyed a discussion on Safety. They reviewed the importance of not talking to strangers and to be wary of strangers with small pets trying to get their attention. They also learned about what precautions to take if they are home alone. The children were encouraged to have phone numbers of all nearby family members readily available. They were instructed to never let anyone in the house and not ever tell anyone that they are home alone. The entire class enjoyed the many exhibits that the Hall of Health had to offer: An exer-cycle to calculate loss of calories, urban pollution and its impact on hearing, cancers of the body, cell division, parts of the heart, genetics, etc. All in all it was a great field trip. The weather was wonderful and we were able to walk around the corner and have lunch outside at the park.
The children are enjoying the warm weather and we have begun to beautify the back of our building with planters filled with bulbs and various types of geraniums. We would like to add more planters so if you have some you would like to donate, please let us know. We also added a nice kitchen herb garden to our class. This way the children can use fresh herbs when cooking.
This week the class has been learning to play Chinese Jump Rope. They are having a lot of fun. Chinese Jump Rope offers fine and large motor skill development. I encourage parents to purchase one for their homes. They usually come with game books to teach the children how to play various games. The children can also make their own jump rope out of rubber bands.
We have been playing tennis and enjoying it. It is very cute to watch them play...it is also quite amusing. We have watched Brea fall and get tangled in the net, Zoe scream because the ball was too close to her, and Kai saying “I got it!” and not even making contact with the ball! They are really having a good time and are not the least bit concerned about their skill level! It is nice to see them just having fun. After all, isn't that what childhood is all about?!

JACARANDA
The children are given an age-appropriate amount of responsibility for the upkeep and preparation of the classroom environment. They sweep, mop, dust and clean up after themselves and as part of a group. They scrub tables, help prepare snack, vote on a limited set of choices on occasion. It is their classroom. This morning, two volunteers scooped the seeds from the cantaloupe for snack, clearly proud of their work. Later, we will plant the seeds in our garden.
The class watches the sprouting seeds we planted several weeks ago push upward from the earth. Every day the sunflower and cantaloupe seedlings grow a little taller now that the soil has warmed up to near sixty degrees.
One of the children said the other day “We are children, not kids, cause kids are baby goats”!
The children had an animated discussion the other day about planets, including the "tenth" planet that astronomers have been studying.
You probably have noticed the new door signs: "Class has started please enter quietly" during the morning work time, and "Children are napping - quiet please" in the afternoon.
Thank you for your cooperation and respect for the integrity of the children's opportunity to work in a focused and uninterrupted way.
You have read and understand how children learn by touching, feeling and manipulating objects: In the concrete, in other words. As part of the study of the continents, the Jacaranda class follows this method. During the study of each continent, there is a shelf with objects from that continent. As we have studied each continent this year, North America, South America, Europe and now Africa, there is a shelf with beautiful and authentic objects from Ms. Leck's life and travels in South Africa.

JUNIPER
Thank you to all of the parents and staff who attended the auction last weekend. It was well enjoyed by all and raised funds for a great cause - kids!
On Wednesday, the children enjoyed a special performance by the Chinese Clown Cabaret. Ms. Jenny and her mother brought joy and fun to the children with their songs and antics. Ms. Yang even got into the act when she helped with a song. Ms. Jenny sang in Spanish, her mother translated into Chinese, then Ms. Yang translated into English. The Juniper children were especially excited because they recognized some Chinese words that they've been learning in class. It was an event well enjoyed by children and adults alike.
"As parents and teachers, we are primarily assisting the child in living graciously. We are the models that will inform and inspire children in their poise and conduct. Children will admire and imitate us no matter what we do. This awesome power carries great responsibility. We must attend to our every movement, our every word. More potent than any lesson is the way we interact with the children."
- From a speech given by Janet Mc Donell at the 1998 National Conference. Ms. Mc Donell is a Montessori teacher trainer in Washing, D.C. She was a GLM teacher from 1980 to 1985.

GINKGO

It's spring again! We've had a fun filled week!
Ms. Mc Clindon is back and brought wedding pictures for the children to see. One child looked at the wedding kiss and said, "Ms. Mc Clindon, you can't do that in public!"
Our hearts, thoughts and prayers go out to the Curry family. Gigi's dad suffered injuries and is in the hospital. Teachers heard that he wanted jokes sent to him so here are some that the 5 years came up with:
What kind of cat can't you trust? A cheetah.
Why did the cat go to the computer room? To catch the mouse.
Why did the spider use the computer? To get to the web site.
Hope to see him well and out of the hospital soon.
We went to an all-school assembly on Wednesday; the Chinese Clown Cabaret. The children loved the show and talked about it all day. Very entertaining for all!
On Thursday we had a birthday celebration for Max who is now 5 years old. He brought irises from his garden at home as a present to the classroom. They look beautiful.
The children are so happy about being outside again. With the weather change we hope to eat lunch outside from now on.
Since Spring Break, the children are increasingly interested in geography. Where do particular plants or animals come from? What is the weather like in other places? Where they went for Spring Break and how long it took to get there. Through use of the Montessori materials children have been receiving one-on-one lessons throughout the year, so you may hear children talking about various things around these subjects at home.
Reminder: With the change in weather we will be engaging in lots of water play, so please remember to check your child's extra clothes, making sure that there's 3 extra pairs of everything - shirts, pants, socks, underwear, etc.
Everyone have a happy and restful weekend!

LIVE OAK

If you didn’t make it to the auction last weekend you missed a great time. We missed you. The children’s individual work for donation is still available to you for $20, payable to GLM.
This week we are finishing up our study of flowers, fruits, vegetables and mammals. May will be our last cultural month finishing the year with classification of animals by continent, their homes and their families. We will be studying Australia and representing that continent at our annual Earth Day, May 31 (more info to follow).
We will also be celebrating Mother’s Day on Friday morning, May 12. Please plan on joining us from 9-11 for our very special day celebrating moms. Invitations will be in the mail next week. Act surprised when they arrive!
Please check your parent pockets and the shelves for items to take home.

MAGNOLIA

The Magnolia class will be having a Cinco de Mayo celebration next week. We have been reading books to the children that have been illustrated by Mexican artists like Simon Silva and Carmen Lomas Garza. We will be doing a couple of special art projects next week. The children will be making a paper mache pinata, as well as Mexican snowflakes called papel picado in class next week. We will break the pinata next Friday, as well as cooking a special snack.
We had a very exciting week. The children watched the removal of a beehive from the bottlebrush tree near the arbor. The beekeepers came with their special suits and equipment to remove the hive and the children watched with rapt attention (from a safe distance, of course). We had a very special and funny performance from a Chinese clown; the children all laughed at her funny skits. She is also a classically trained opera singer and she sang an aria at the end of the performance.

MULBERRY

The auction turned out to be a really nice event. I can't thank all of the parents who helped with our projects enough. There are still a few of you that haven't purchased your child's tee shirts yet. Today is the last day to purchase so get your orders in if you want your child's project.
Our yards are in the process of being set up after getting the new grass. Today some of the children helped scrub shelves. Our sand box has been moved and we are in need of more sand. We would also like to plant a garden in the side yard with the children. If you’d like too help with either project let Ms. Aima know.
Friday, Kennedy from elementary came and read two books about insects and on Tuesday Claire came and read a Chinese folk tale, "The Most Beautiful Gift".
Yesterday we walked over to Magnolia to watch a Chinese clown and her mother perform. They sang lots of silly songs and had a very captive audience.
Please remember that class starts at 8:45 am. Coming late is very disruptive to the class and your child misses out on an important part of the day. If your child is late please enter through the kitchen door and quietly get a teachers attention to help with your good bye in the kitchen.
Song of the week:
If all of the rain drops were frosty and freezes,
Oh what a rain it would be!
We'd all walk around with our mouths opened wide,
Ah, ah ,ah, ah, ah, ah.
If all of the rain drops were..............(substitute different foods).

CAMELLIA
We hope everyone had a great time at the auction; Mr. Tien and his wife had a wonderful time! Excellent food, wine, cheeses, action and company. That was Mr. Tien’s wife’s first time at an auction. It was a very good experience for her. Thank you for your kindness.
The Camellia class projects are still available if you missed the auction. There is an order form in the Camellia class - ask Mr. Tien if you have any questions.
We have two special guests who came to perform this week; Jane Chan and her real-life mother in the Chinese Clown Cabaret. They were very funny and talented. All the children (and staff) had a good time and a lot of laughs watching them.
Saturday, May 6th, is the work party at GLM. This is a good time to finish your Parent Participation Hours, helping with painting, window washing, gardening, and more. For information please contact the office. Remember, next week’s sound is "BL", as in block, blanket, and blue.
A friendly reminder: If you are arrive late for class please ask a teacher to help with your good-bye. The other children are concentrating on their work and are easily distracted when children and parents enter the room. Thank you.
Mr. Sunshine has come back! Now that the days are really warming up we’re doing more water activities. Please be sure to have replacement clothing at school for the inevitable wet outfits.
