END OF YEAR PICNIC - JUNE 2nd, 5 pm - 8 pm, AT LAKE TEMESCAL
This family style picnic is the perfect way to end the school year!!! Be prepared for the possible fog - dress in layers. GLM will be providing the meat (and veggie dogs) - the rest will be potluck style, and sign up sheets will be forthcoming. Families will be asked to bring their own plates, cups, utensils and any wine, beer or other specialty beverage of your choice (in addition to your potluck contribution). Please remember, the teachers are not working during the picnic, and you will be entirely responsible for the care of your child(ren). There is a large bank of Juniper at the site that the children should not play in (hide & seek), likewise, there is poison oak on the hillsides, so we ask that children not climb the hills. Bring Hula Hoops, softball equipment, Frisbees, or other fun outdoor stuff.
This is one of the last chances to get Parent Participation Hours (and have fun in the process!) Calling all Dads!!! We need a barbeque crew from 4 pm - 7:00 pm. If you are interested, contact Chris Keusel, Live Oak Parent (chriskuesel@yahoo.com). Parents for the clean-up crew are needed as well.
IMPORTANT NOTE: We have a number of children at GLM with serious allergies to nuts and nut products. PLEASE DO NOT INCLUDE ANY ITEM TO SHARE THAT CONTAINS ANY NUT PRODUCTS. Thank you.

TEACHER APPRECIATION LUNCH
Quiches, frittatas, curried chicken salad, rice salads, green salads, pasta salads, fruit salads, fried chicken, BBQ ribs, chicken wings, ravioli, macaroni, pot stickers, dolmas, garlic-leek soup, roasted chickens, antipasto nibbles, veggies and dips, pita and hummus – that’s just the tip of the iceberg!
And the desserts! Cakes, brownies, chocolate chip cookies, pound cake, sugar cookies, brownies, coconut cookies, See’s candies, brownies, fruit-filled cookies, muffins….did I mention brownies? What an extravagant spread! There was so much food from our wonderful parents the leftovers went into 3 different refrigerators! And, we can’t forget the flowers and all the sweet, appreciative notes and cards. We can’t thank you all enough for your support and generosity! (Look for your containers on the outside table between the elementary building and the Brown Cottage)

SOUND OF THE WEEK Each Wednesday your child is encouraged, with your help, to find an object at home (preferably not a toy) that contains the sound of the week. Put it in a labeled bag to share with your child’s class. The sound for next week is “DR” as in DRive, DRag, and DRum.

ALL-SCHOOL ASSEMBLY
On Tuesday, June 6, at 3 pm, GLM is pleased to announce the return of the marvelous group, Alborada. Alborada offers an Andean Latin-American show, playing a variety of handmade instruments from South America. Please join us on the lawn by the arbor for this delightful event!

CLASS NEWS

REDWOOD (ELEMENTARY)
Redwood celebrated the graduation of three of the 6th year students this week. During the celebration each of the graduates gave a speech:
“Good evening everyone and welcome to the 6th years and kindergarten Moving-On ceremony. I would like to thank everyone for coming to a day that I will never forget. From the time I first came to GLM, GLM has always been full of surprises, awesome friends, and best of all, the greatest teachers. The thing I like about GLM is that it encourages everyone to learn at their own pace, but at the same time it encourages everyone to try their best. One thing I learned in GLM was English. Without knowing English I wouldn’t be here and I would still be in preschool. So I would like to thank Ms. Aima for teaching me that. Before Ms. Aima taught me English school was very hard. Another accomplishment I made was learning cursive which Ms. Rankins helped me learn. Before Ms. Rankins helped me my handwriting was very sloppy and hard to read but when Ms. Rankins helped me my handwriting greatly improved so I would like to thank her for that. I think Ms. Rankins and Ms. Van Nest are doing a very good job at teaching and I am very sorry to hear that Ms. Van Nest is leaving and I hope she continues to be a good person and help other people.” Crystal Lee
“When I came to GLM I was 8 years old and in the 3rd grade. It was kind of scary because there were a lot of kids. On the second day of school I met a very good friend. I was the first kid in the class to grow taller than the teacher and the first kid to break my arm in the Redwood class. I am never tardy. When I came to GLM I only knew how to write a cursive A. I got better at handwriting and better at math. I think that this school is my favorite ever so far. I wish I could stay here longer.” Eric Hampton
“GLM has been and still is a great experience for me. Its small classes helped me learn at my own pace. GLM was the second school I went to. The first school was a pre-school, but anyway, GLM is where I learned how to read. I would like to thank the person who took the time out to teach me how to read and that person is Ms. Rankins. Ms. Rankins has been a wonderful teacher and a wonderful friend and a great role model. I would also like to thank Ms. Campbell for starting this wonderful school so thank you. I would also like to thank Mr. Tien and Ms. Aima even though they weren’t my teachers. They really do mean a lot to me, so thank you. Even though I didn’t say all of the GLM staff I really do appreciate you all. I am really going to miss you all. Love always, Brea” (Hammonds).

JACARANDA
Congratulations to the Victorino family, on the birth of Kealia's sister, Kloe. The Jacaranda teachers and children welcome her into the world!
The entire school enjoyed and was amazed by the Chinese acrobats who performed last Wednesday. If you have never seen anyone balance on one foot on top of another's head, you, too, would have been amazed.
The class and volunteers are busy at work on preparing for the lunch next week. We have this event as a way of saying goodbye to those moving on to other schools and as a way of sharing what each child and adult in the class will be doing over the summer.
The puzzle map of Africa with names has been a popular work with some of the older children these past couple of weeks.
A parent shared the story of how, at the beach, one of the children made an isthmus, and learned how the children have a land and water form work in the classroom that allows them to pour water into a form that leaves only the land showing.

JUNIPER
On Thursday, the children decided that they wanted some lemons. No, not lemonade, just lemons. So we took a walk to one of the lemon trees and picked a fresh lemon for each child. Some children decided to eat their lemons outright while others decided to hand juice them and drink the juice. A sour treat, no doubt, but one that they all thoroughly enjoyed.
A funny conversation:
Casey: (sniffing her hands at 8:30 a.m.) My hands smell like key lime pie.
Mr. Hennigan: Why is that?
Casey: Maybe Isabella (sitting near by) has key lime pie in her snack bag.

Reminder: Sunburns can occur even on overcast days (thin clouds do little to stop UVA and UVB rays). Please put sun block on your child every day and protect their young skin. We will re-apply the lotion throughout the day. Don’t forget the tops of the ears and the backs of necks!

GINKGO
The children have been busy practicing their dance and working on their South America display in preparation for Earth Day. Some children have brought in books to share about the Amazon Rain Forest. They have starting making "animals books", which are books full of the animals that live in the Rain Forest.
The Ginkgo garden is beginning to grow! Yes, our radishes are blossoming and we are excited. Please stop by and look at our planter boxes and see our work.
This week’s sound was "SW". The children brought in a number of items; Sweater and SWimming pictures to name two.
We wish everyone a wonderful three-day weekend!

LIVE OAK
The children have been very busy preparing for Earth Day next week. Our continent is Australia, or Oceania as it is now called (including all the surrounding islands). Some children have drawn all the flags of all the countries and have drawn posters of all the animals. Others have traced and painted maps of Australia. We have been talking about and learning what biomes are and what animals live where. In Australia there is the Great Barrier Reef, the Savannahs, the Desert (outback) and the Mountains. All the children have made up a dance of the animals set to Digeridoo music. Next week we will be making kiwi popsicles for the event on Wednesday morning. We do need some helpers if you are available as we have a craft project for the rest of the school to experience.
On Monday, June 5, Live Oak will have our annual tea. It is an event for the children to share with each other their plans for the summer and a time to say farewell to those students moving on. I would like to serve fresh lime-aid (with sparkling water), and some very special appetizer type snacks (cucumber sandwiches, samosa, spinach pie, etc). We will also love to have flowers from gardens (roses would be great) and tablecloths to borrow for the day. The event will be at 10:00 am. This event is for the children of Live Oak to acknowledge transition.
It’s hard to believe there are only a few short weeks of school left. It hit all of us today as we ate the wonderful food you all provided for the appreciation lunch. We all felt truly appreciated. Thank you.

MAGNOLIA
The children are all very excited about our Earth Day celebration. We have been practicing our dance daily, which the children love. In the afternoon the children have begun making flags and maps to decorate our area. A big thank you to Katie Anderson for coming in to help decorate the bags the children will use to hold all of their Earth Day crafts. On Thursdays we have been practicing our song “De Colores” with guitar accompaniment thanks to Mr. Hoffman.
We will have our end of the year luncheon on Tuesday, June 6th. This is an opportunity for the children to celebrate the year with their classmates as well as say goodbye to friends who are going to different schools. The children will spend the morning making a delicious meal to share together.

MULBERRY
A big thank you to all the parents for remembering us on Teacher Appreciation Day. All of the food was incredible! I would like to thank all the parents for putting their trust in us to take care of their children. Each of them have a special place in our hearts.
The toddlers continue to practice their African song, "Jambo", for Earth Day.
On Tuesday we had a special guest, Charlotte (a friend of Mrs. Campbell), visit us. She taught the children some German songs and dance. They also learned to count to three in German - eins, zwei, drei.
Thank you to Eric Rathhaus for reading books to the class. The children love to have parents read!
The end of the school year is quickly approaching and there are lots of dates to remember:
May 30, 5:00-6:00 -Transition Meeting
May 31, Earth Day Celebration - no lunch needed
June 2, All School Picnic at Lake Temescal
June 9, End of Year Toddler Pot Luck for lunch
June 12, Welcome Wine and Cheese 5:00-6:30 (to meet & greet new teachers in Live Oak and Gingko)
Quote of the week: It is the adult’s job to provide healthy food, it is the child’s responsibility to eat it, according to his or her needs. Do not make an issue of food. Parental control overrides the child’s inner awareness of what and how much to eat. As with many issues of parenting, if we observe, we see that the child is fine and we gain trust.
Song of the week:
Jambo jambo.
Jambo sana jambo. Jambo sana jambo.
Hello, hello, hello everybody, hello.
Hello, everybody, hello.

CAMELLIA
Can you believe it is almost the end of the school year?!
We celebrated Logan's 3rd birthday this week. Thank you for the delicious muffins and the wonderful book, "Time to Say Please" by Mo Willems.
This week’s sound was "SW" and we had SWitching track, SWim trunks, Nick SWisher (baseball player). Stella, Ethan's mom, did it again - SWeet potato pie!
Next week’s sound is "DR". Please continue to encourage your child to bring something in to share with the class. Thank you.
What a wonderful and delicious Teacher Appreciation Day. Mr. Tien actually got full! Thank you all very, very much!
Reminders: May 29 is Memorial Day - school is closed and no childcare is provided.
May 30 is the Transition Meeting from 5 to 6 p.m. with a pizza snack afterwards in the arbor. We strongly recommend all the toddler families come. This is a great time to ask questions.
