END OF YEAR PICNIC - JUNE 2nd, 5 pm - 8 pm, AT LAKE TEMESCALWe hope to see everyone at the picnic this evening. The site is at the east side of the lake, where Highway 24 and the Caldecott Tunnel are. Our picnic area is right off the parking lot. Be sure to bring warm clothes as the fog can move in quickly.
IMPORTANT NOTE: We have a number of children at GLM with serious allergies to nuts and nut products.
PLEASE DO NOT INCLUDE ANY ITEM TO SHARE THAT CONTAINS ANY NUT PRODUCTS. Thank you.
SEEKING BRADLEY GRAHAMBradley Graham won an auction prize; however, GLM has no way to contact this person. If you are a relative or friend of Bradley, please ask him to contact the school office – 510-836-4313. Thank you.
LOST CLOTHINGAll clothing not claimed in the Lost & Found bins, classrooms, and on the yards will be cleaned and donated to charity during Staff Week.
ALL-SCHOOL ASSEMBLYOn Tuesday, June 6, at 3 pm, GLM is pleased to announce the return of the marvelous group, Alborada. Alborada offers an Andean Latin-American show, playing a variety of handmade instruments from South America. They sing in English and Spanish and the children are invited to actively participate where appropriate. The music gets every one on their feet! Please join us on the lawn by the arbor for this delightful event!
TEACHER APPRECIATIONBe sure to pick up your dishes/containers. They are on an outside table between the Brown Cottage and the elementary building (down a flight of stairs). Thanks again to you all!
SOUND OF THE WEEK Each Wednesday your child is encouraged, with your help, to find an object at home (preferably not a toy) that contains the sound of the week. Put it in a labeled bag to share with your child’s class. The sound for next week is “FR” as in FRog, FRagile, and FRagrant. This is the last Sound of the Week until next September.
SUMMER MOTHER’S HELPER AVAILABLETired of scrubbing your shower? Bored with sitting next to the shredder, feeding it secret documents? Not into kneeling in your yard, pulling weeds? Want to get a pedicure without your preschooler? Samantha Aima, 13 years old, is very responsible, a hard worker, and available this summer to do various household chores. Pay is negotiable. Please contact Mary Aima in the Brown Cottage if interested, 510-622-0258.

CLASS NEWS
REDWOOD (ELEMENTARY)The elementary children had a wonderful trip to watch the Montessori School of Fremont's opera. They were doing the opera “Moon Maiden”. The children had a great time watching the differences and also seeing the roles they have previously played. It was nice for the children to see Judy and Sanford Jones. We followed our opera up with a great pizza lunch.
We enjoyed our final Spanish lessons of the year last week. We presented Senora Robertson with an autographed potted plant from us. We will miss her!
This week we had a great Earth Day. The children learned a little about the reunification of Germany and the events of the country being divided. They had so much fun having their passports stamped and tasting the delicious foods. The comments were unanimous, "The food and crafts were so good this year!" Thank you to everyone who helped to make this a wonderful event.
We also said a goodbye to our favorite music teacher, Mr. Hoffmann. The children have learned so much this year in their recorder lessons. In a time when most school are having to cut their music programs we are very fortunate to have Mr. Hoffmann. This week he played his fiddle for us as we danced to “Sasha”!
JACARANDAThank you to everyone involved in the Teacher Appreciation Day last week! Thank you for the cards and other recognition. We are lucky to love what we do and to be supported by the families who are part of our community.
The Jacaranda class luncheon, scheduled for Monday, June 5th: Sign-up sheet is almost full. Thank you again.
A German friend of Helen Campbell's joined our class last week and taught everyone a song and dance. While she was here at Grand Lake Montessori, she visited the other classes and even taught the Elementary class the song and dance they performed for the school-wide Earth Day celebration on Wednesday.
This is the time of year when we recognize the transition of the children and families to and from the Jacaranda class. Some of the children will stay in the fall, in Jacaranda or in the Elementary class. Others will be here for summer camp, and others will be moving on to new schools. If your child is having a "last day" in Jacaranda, please leave us a note on a slip of paper or by email that date if you have not done so already. This includes summer camp children as well. This way we will ensure we all have a chance to say goodbye to one another.
On Wednesday of this week, Mr. Moody's Young Imaginations brought a dancer and musician in to share the music and dancing of the Caribbean, from Hispanolia to Veracruz. The children were able to journey from one end of the Caribbean to the other through the music and movement of the Spanish speaking performers.
On Thursday, the cello teacher of Ms. Yang in the Juniper class came and told stories and accompanied her tales with accents and sweet music from her instrument. She kept an audience of five classes enthralled during the time the classes were gathered on the grass.
Earth Day was an event that allowed the children to move from "continent" to "continent" as each class had set up its own continent-themed table. This incorporated the Montessori belief that children should have freedom of movement and exposure to the world through the different senses: touch, taste, smell, sight and sound. The day was filled with different stimuli, and we are sure the children slept well while they dreamed and processed the day in their growing brains. Everyone enjoyed the flavorful dishes Mrs. Saleem and her husband prepared for the occasion. Thank you to Luna's mom for the henna body painting. The event really embodied what Grand Lake Montessori believes: that childhood should be a journey.
JUNIPERThank you to all of the parents who have been spending time with the children and sharing food and culture. Recently Maddy's mom, Malinda Hardtke, brought in banana bread for the children's snack. A welcome change after having toast almost every morning!
As the school year ends, we like to honor the older children who are going on to first grade at other schools. Juniper recently honored Dashiell as he prepares to move on. His parents brought in yogurt and fruit to share with the children and thanked them for being a part of Dashiell's experience here at GLM. If your child is leaving GLM and you would like to have a celebration, please talk to your head teacher.
BIG, BIG thank yous to all of the parents who helped behind the scenes (making passports, setting up sun covers, serving food, leading activities, etc.) to make GLM's Earth Day celebration a success. The children had a great time!
"The child retains his ability to learn by absorbing until he is almost seven years old, Dr. Montessori reasoned that his experience could be enriched by a classroom where he could handle materials which would demonstrate basic educational information for him." (from A Parent's Guide to the Montessori Classroom, p.4) This process of absorbing happens every day in the classroom, right up to the last day of school. As such, please help your children arrive on time to class in order to minimize distractions and to help learning occur every day. Thank you.
GINKGOThis week the children very excitedly continued their preparation for Earth Day. The day before Earth Day the children told one another “Happy Day before Earth Day”!
During the Earth Day celebration the children enjoy watching the other classes sing songs and dance along with performing our Bolivian dance that we’ve practiced. After all the performances we were invited to visit other “parts of the world”. At the different stations we sampled foods from that country and spent time making a special craft. Thank you to all of the parents who helped with the preparations for this marvelous event!
In the afternoon the children enjoyed a performance by “Dances of Veracruz & Beyond”.
Reminder: We have changed the date of our tea party to Tuesday June 6, 2006.
LIVE OAKEarth Day was a great success. I have a funny story to share. In the morning we were going over the words of our dance so the children could get the timing and sequence. Well, at the end of our reading the children all of a sudden were raising their hands and letting me know all the animals of Australia we forgot. We forgot the ebu, the kiwi, the platypus, the wallaby, the Tasmanian devil, and I’m sure some others. It’s funny because as we were creating the dance we made up movements for all of them. It was a great success and the children had a great time. In the afternoon we were treated with live music from “Aranga”. We all had a good time.
Our tea is scheduled for Monday morning. Thank you all so much for your contributions. We are set for everything. If you are making a snack, please make one for all (28 children).
It’s hard to accept that next week is the last week of school. It will be very difficult to say goodbye. The year went by like a breath. Please let us know if your child has a last day that is not Friday. Closure is very important and we want to be able to say goodbye.
MAGNOLIAWhat a fun and exciting week the children had! Earth Day was a huge success. Each classroom set up a very culturally rich area with great snacks and fun crafts. All of the performances were beautifully done. The Magnolia children had a wonderful time performing their dance. It was a very festive day. A huge thank to Tirien Steinbach for helping make the passports, medallions and manning our North America booth. Thank you Andrea Horvath for also helping man our booth.
We will be having our end of the year lunch on Tuesday, June 6th. The children will make a special meal with their friends and do not need to bring a lunch on this day. We will be celebrating the end of a great year together as well as new beginnings for children who are leaving Magnolia. Please remember to bring your child's special ingredient to school on Monday.
MULBERRYThis week has been a busy week for Mulberry. On Tuesday the children made potato macaroni with Ms. Kebede. First, the tomatoes were cut up for the sauce. While the sauce was cooking the children mashed potatoes up with their hands and mixed in flour. They then rolled the potatoes like snakes and cut them up. They were boiled and sauce was poured over the “noodles”. The children enjoyed eating what they helped prepare.
They also peeled yams for our Earth Day celebration and decorated bags. Wednesday was our big Earth Day Celebration. We started the day with all of the classes performing different songs and dances from the different continents. The children were paired up with parents and walked around to different booths representing the continents. The children tasted many different foods from around the world and participated in different crafts. They each had a “passport” that was stamped at each continent!
Don't forget this Friday is the end of the year school picnic at Lake Temescal, from 5 - 8 pm. We hope to see everyone there!
Next Friday is the last day of school and we will be having a lunch potluck at 11:30. Parents, please join us if you can. The last day of school we ask that you take home all of your child's extra clothes and nap blankets, and empty their cubbies so we can set up for the summer. Children who are coming for the summer should bring two changes of clothes when they come back.
School will be closed the week of June 12th for Staff Week. Our big project will be moving the Mulberry class to the front of the Brown Cottage. At the start of the summer we will have one toddler group. Some of the toddlers will be visiting primary and we will have some new toddlers joining us.
Song of the week:
Motor boat, motor boat, oh so slow.
Motor boat, motor boat, oh so fast, vroooooom.
CAMELLIASummer is just around the corner and the weather is really warming up. Please dress your child appropriately (short sleeves, shorts, hat, etc). With water play happening often please make sure your child has a complete change of clothes! Thank you.
This week we celebrated Isabella Bartling’s 3rd birthday. We enjoyed a wonderful fruit salad and blue berry muffins, thanks to Erica and Aron Bartling.
Remember, this Friday, June 2nd is the all school picnic at Lake Temescal from 5 to 8 p.m. There is a sign-up sheet on the clipboard. Please indicate what dish you’d like to share. We ask that families bring their own plates, cups, and utensils. And remember, NO NUTS.
What a wonderful Earth Day we had! Thank you to all the parents who came and helped. Everyone enjoyed all the performances and the food from all the different continents; fried rice, tamales, popsicles, yams, tortillas and salsa, and more!
This week’s sound was "DR". Stella, Ethan's mom, made a beautiful Drum-shape cake! Very delicious! Next week’s sound will be “FR”, and is the last Sound of the Week until September. Thank you to all the parents for supporting this favorite school routine.
Quote of the week: Provide Emotional Space
Most of us have very full lives when a child arrives. We need to give as much effort to preparing emotional space for the child as we do preparing the physical space. A baby needs much of our time, especially at first. A parent can feel that the entire day is spent holding, diapering, and feeding the baby. This is a very short and special time that the child is totally dependent on you. Each child needs to feel accepted, welcomed, and loved from the start - even prenatally. “Infants and Toddlers” magazine
