CLASS NEWS

REDWOOD (ELEMENTARY)

The elementary class is on their annual end of the year camping trip in Del Valle Park in Livermore. They awoke the first morning to dew-covered sleeping bags, grass, picnic tables…everything! They are counting on the weather to warm up today so they can go swimming in the lake.
With the end of the year come farewells. We will dearly miss Brea Hammonds, Eric Hampton and Crystal Lee, but wish them success and happiness in their futures!

JACARANDA
Happy birthday to Emilio (4) & Avery (6)! Avery shared his personal home-made book telling the story of his adoption in Cambodia. Thank you, Emilio, for beautiful bell and vase.
This week has been one of goodbyes. On the last day of school we say goodbye to Alice and Ben Sigal, Avery von Herrmann, Camille Lorenz-Horne, Kayden Elmer-Schurr, Sadie Loduha and Will Dalton. We shared food with the families of thesehttp://www.blogger.com/img/gl.bold.gif children this week, reading stories and telling of our plans for the future. We also discussed how you can feel excited and nervous at the same time. We reminded these children that they will always be part of the Jacaranda class and can return to visit any time.
Thank you to all of the Jacaranda families for their support and trust over the last year!
We are looking forward to a happy, busy, fun-filled summer and welcoming all our new families.
Don’t forget to take home all belongings; Items in cubbies, nap beds, clothing, etc.
A very grateful thank you to Laura Lorenz, Kristen Talley, and Carolyn Baird for all their Room Parent assistant!

JUNIPER

As the older children prepare to move on, we have enjoyed some wonderful goodbye and good luck celebrations. Dashiell had his celebration last week, and this week we celebrated Isabella's time here by listening to her favorite CD, eating some delicious blueberry muffins, and dancing. Isabella also gave the class two books so that we will remember her each time we read them. In the next few days we will also say goodbye and good luck to Ayden Riley and Jordan Jung. We wish each of them the very best and hope that they will come back OFTEN to visit.
Louis Loduha and his family are moving out of town. We will miss them all and wish them the best. "I will write peace on your wings and you will fly all over the world." - Sadako Sasaki
Mr. Moody visited the children this week and did a series of Chinese culture activities. With Chinese classical music, the children experienced chi-gong movements. Also, a morality tale was told about "choosing what you can do." The Juniper children also got their hands on instruments from several different cultures. They played the instruments with Chinese music and it turned into a full band. At the end, Mr. Moody introduced some facial massage techniques that Chinese people often use. For example, you can use your index fingers and rub under both your eyes, helping to relax the eyes. Also, you can massage both ears when you feel the need to reduce your tiredness.
During the summer, all of the Juniper teachers will be at GLM except when on vacation. Ms. Koerber will be supervising children in the opera camp, July 31 - August 11. Mr. Hennigan and Ms. Yang will be in the classroom. We encourage all five year olds who have not yet done so to sign up for opera camp. It is a great experience for everyone involved. Don't miss out!
"Novelty becomes a source of motivation, then, if there is the right correspondence of the old with the new... If there is too much novelty or incongruity, the child will be overwhelmed; if there is too little, he will be bored... [Montessori solves] this problem on a practical level through giving the child freedom of choice in selecting from a wide variety of materials, graded in difficulty and complexity." from Montessori - A Modern Approach, pgs. 22-23.

GINKGO
On Monday we had a birthday celebration for Lucia. She is now 6 years old! Both of her parents came and told Lucia’s life story. After singing happy birthday, we enjoyed banana muffins. Lucia also brought the class presents; a wooden fish, pencils, markers and a pencil sharper! The children clapped when they saw the pencil sharper.
On Tuesday we had our tea party. Thank you to all the parents who came and helped (Marni, Campbell’s mom, Jake’s grandmother, Margot, and Shirley, Max’s mom). Each child told the class where he/she will be next year. Ms. Smith also told the children what she was going to be doing next year. After the feast we had a toast and shouted “Hooray!” Marni passed out certificates to all the children. We had a wonderful time.
Thank you to our terrific families for all your support this year!
The children that are moving on will be dearly missed. We will miss Ms. Smith and wish her good luck with her business in fashion design.
We’ve a great year. Thank you to all the parents for supporting the Ginkgo classroom. The children have made many accomplishments this year. We’re so proud of them.
We wish everyone a nice summer and look forward to seeing returning students in the fall.

LIVE OAK
Well, here we are in the last few days of the year. Ms. Basom, Mr. Boyer, Ms. Cebulski, and Ms. Mac Donald thank you all very much for your acknowledgement of our year together with your children. Of course, any good year is also a result of great parents and all of you contributed so much this year. THANK YOU!
For those families that are moving on, we all wish you the best and those of you returning we look forward to an awesome new year.
Wishing everyone a safe, fun-inspired summer.

MAGNOLIA
As the school year wraps up the Magnolia classroom celebrated the end of the year with a feast. The children helped in the preparation of the meal that included spaghetti, meatballs, green beans and strawberry shortcake for dessert. Thank you to all our wonderful families who gave so much of themselves and time during the year!
Today was also Mr. Hoffman’s last visit for the year and surprisingly the children are still requesting “Oh Hannukah” and “Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer” for sing a long! We will miss our students who won’t be attending the summer session and look forward to seeing them in the fall. The children who are transitioning to kindergarten in other schools will be truly missed since they are our role models, dedicated helpers and mediators for the other children and always hard at work.
Children from the Brown Cottage have begun transitioning to the Magnolia classroom and we look forward to all the new faces next fall. Until then, good luck and enjoy your summer!!

MULBERRY
The last week of school has been a high-energy week! I think the children know the end of the year is here. Tomorrow we will have our end of the year potluck (for parents, too). There has been confusion on the time so we have decided to have it start at 9:00 amand run till noon. Parents can stop by anytime during these hours. Once again I want to thank all of our parents who have helped make this year great by sharing their time with us. We couldn't do all that we do without your help! A special thanks to our Room Parents for all their extra help.
Remember to bring home your children's extra clothes, nap blankets and things in their cubbies. Hope you all have nice and safe summer.
Quote of the week: Parents and teachers alike can renew a personal affinity for nature as more time is spent there with young children. Adults can slow down, take the time it takes to move at a young child's pace and savor the wonder and contentment of spending time with the source of life.

CAMELLIA
Hard to believe this is the last week of school! Time has gone by so fast. We had wonderful experiences this year with your children. The Camellia teachers will miss all of the children. A very big, big hug and thank you to all our Room Parents; Marni Hunter, Diane Speigel, Maya Chorengel, and Zayda Thiel. We really appreciate all the class shopping, baking, auction projects, e-mailings, class activities, story reading, and support. Thank you to Stella Castillo for baking all those clever and delicious treats for Sound of the Week!
Reminder: Next week (June, 12-16) school is closed for staff week - there will be no childcare provided. Summer Session 1 begins June 19, 2006.
Please check your child’s cubby. There is a lot of artwork in them. Be sure to please collect all of your child’s clothing from their basket, around the yard and the classrooms. Unclaimed clothing will be laundered and given to charity. Thank you very much.
Quote of the week:
ESTABLISH ROUTINES
Adults often only see the chaotic side of children, but young ones are truly creatures of routine who are trying to make sense of the world, so they look for consistency. The first routines that babies discover are night/day and feeding routines.
Hope to see everyone at the end of the year class potluck. Come and chat with parents and staff. Camellia teachers wish everybody a wonderful summer.
