LAKE PARK CLASSESDuring the summer, with smaller class sizes, the Magnolia class combines downstairs with Ginkgo and Live Oak. Juniper and Jacaranda also combine. Each child in the Lake Park campus has a new, labeled hook for belongings downstairs and a special orange folder for take home projects and messages from the teachers and the office. Look for the folders in the file box by the sign-in/out clipboards at pick-up.
After 4 pm, all children are at the upper campus (Jacaranda and Juniper) for pick-up.
During the afternoon children from all the classes get to enjoy the outdoor classroom, participating in the clay studio, P.E., water play, gardening, carpentry, and art under the canopies.
If you have any question or need to be shown where hooks or the orange folders are, please ask a teacher.
WATER DAYSOur water days will be starting at the beginning of July. Because of the foggy days we have decided to play it by ear and not have an assigned day. Your part is to bring in a water day bag complete with bathing suit, towel and water shoes, that can remain at school – all clearly labeled with your child’s name!!!. You should take it home to launder on Friday. You could also check everyday or so to see if the bathing suit or towel are still wet. We shall do our best to dry them first. This way we will not have the fog get in the way of our water day fun!!
STUDY ON HOW KIDS THINK ABOUT GENDER NORMSClare Conry-Murray, mom of Aidan Conry-Murray (Ginkgo), is doing a study on how kids' thinking about gender norms develops from preschool to elementary school. She will be conducting interviews this summer at GLM. If you are interested in having your child participate, look for the flyer and consent letter in your child's backpack, or e-mail her at cconry@berkeley.edu.
PARENT PARTICIPATION HOURSAugust 18th is the last day to wrap up your Parent Participation Hours for this school year. Take a Break will continue throughout the summer and parents are needed to assist with the hot lunch program on Fridays. There are other projects as well; sewing, tightening screws on chairs, and laminating, just to name a few. Please contact the school office or your child’s teacher.
(Please note: Hours done this summer apply to the 2005/2006 school year. They cannot be used towards the 2006/2007 school year).
NANNY SHAREWe have a wonderful nanny who has been working for us full time for 4.5 years. We are looking for someone to share our nanny (with Nicholas, who is 20 months) on Wednesday’s. We live in Glenview. Please contact Kim Kuesel at kim.kuesel@cpwm.com if interested.

REDWOOD (ELEMENTARY)Elementary has been having a wonderful time this week experimenting with making crystals. We have combined different household materials to see where crystals will grow the best. We have also been doing some really cool craft projects; we have made some mosaic tiles, potholders, and wooden birdhouses. This Friday we will be taking BART to Zeum in San Francisco. Next week we will be focusing on ponds and streams. We will also be taking a field trip to the Oakland Zoo.
LAKE PARK CAMPUS (Magnolia, Ginkgo, Live Oak)
It has been a busy week in the Lake Park campus. The first day of our summer program we welcomed Jeremy the Juggler. Jeremy wowed the children with his juggling and unicycle tricks. He also demonstrated some amazing origami art pieces. The children are all enjoying the "outdoor classrooms", clay studio and carpentry are particularly popular. Hot weather tips:
Put a cold pack in your child's lunch box to keep food fresh.
Liberally apply sunscreen before your child gets dressed in the morning, and don’t forget the tops of the ears and back of the neck!
Send a change of clothes to school (light-weight), as it is great fun to run from teachers bearing hoses!
UPPER CAMPUS(Jacaranda, Juniper)
Well...it certainly feels like summer this week! Jacaranda and Juniper are combined for the summer so the children are able to be in both yard areas and in both classes! There are lots and lots of new Summer activities on the shelves: foot washing, eggshell crushing for the garden, washing laundry, washing the baby doll and making birdseed for the bird feeder (we need egg shells and stale bread please!!) There has also been lots and lots of water play! Please be sure to apply sunscreen before you leave the house in the morning and we shall reapply it at school.
On Monday Jeremy the Juggler came to visit us! He juggled balls, did origami and performed tricks on his unicycle. He is very popular with the children. Please ask a staff member for his card - he is a great birthday party act.
BROWN COTTAGE(Mulberry, Camellia)
The toddlers are off to a good start this summer. The Mulberry class is in the front of the building now and the children were surprised to see the fish and birds in the front room. We have been trying to stay cool by playing in the water a lot. Throughout the summer we will be putting the children in the thick padded underpants from Tiny Tots to play in the water. We are asking that each child bring in an extra tee shirt to help protect them from the sun when we are playing in the water. Please apply sunscreen before school in the morning and we will reapply throughout the day.
