pan style="font-weight:bold;">EAST BAY VIVARIUM
We had a great visit with Owen and his friends from the East Bay Vivarium. He brought a tarantula, scorpion, centipede, turtle, tortoises (a 3 week old and a 5 year old), snakes, frogs and lizards! The children were fascinated and they all got a up-close look at each animal. Take your child to the Viarium for a fun outing – he/she will be able to tell you things they learned about some of the critters that came to school (East Bay Vivarium, 1827 – 5th St., Berkeley).
STUDY ON HOW KIDS THINK ABOUT GENDER NORMSClare Conry-Murray, mom of Aidan Conry-Murray (Ginkgo), is doing a study on how kids' thinking about gender norms develops from preschool to elementary school. She will be conducting interviews this summer at GLM. If you are interested in having your child participate, look for the flyer and consent letter in your child's backpack, or e-mail her at cconry@berkeley.edu.
PARENT PARTICIPATION HOURSAugust 18th is the last day to wrap up your Parent Participation Hours for this school year. Take a Break will continue throughout the summer and parents are needed to assist with the hot lunch program on Fridays. There are other projects as well; sewing, tightening screws on chairs, and laminating, just to name a few. Please contact the school office or your child’s teacher.
(Please note: Hours done this summer apply to the 2005/2006 school year. They cannot be used towards the 2006/2007 school year).
NANNY SHAREWe have a wonderful nanny who has been working for us full time for 4.5 years. We are looking for someone to share our nanny (with Nicholas, who is 20 months) on Wednesday’s. We live in Glenview. Please contact Kim Kuesel at kim.kuesel@cpwm.com if interested.

LAKE PARK CAMPUS
(Magnolia, Ginkgo, Live Oak)We are so excited! Our mornings are very busy with Montessori lessons. The children are enjoying Yogadoodles (children’s yoga), painting, and meeting the new children. Our new students are transitioning into the classes easily. It’s as if they have always been a part of our community.
Afternoons are spent outside with weaving, clay, carpentry and gardening. The radishes are ready and the children have been savoring radish sandwiches!
We appreciate everyone applying sunscreen to their children before arriving at school. Since the weather is warm in the afternoon we want to begin doing Slip ‘n Slide, but need your help in remembering to send bathing suit, towel, water shoes (if you want), so no one feels left out (clearly mark all items with child’s name).
We will also begin playing T-ball on Mondays and Fridays and appreciate closed-toed shoes for all children participating in this activity.
It’s been a relaxing and pleasant summer so far. We look forward to the rest of it! If you’d like to join us in any way (reading, being on the playground, doing volunteer hours) please call or email the teachers.
UPPER CAMPUS
(Jacaranda, Juniper)Water days are coming! We will be starting water days next week, so please make sure that your child has each of the following in his/her clothing bag:
- swimsuit
- towel
- water shoes, if possible (please, no flip-flops)
Everything MUST be labeled with your child’s name!
Because of the unpredictability of the fog, we have not designated a specific day for water play. So it's important that each child have the above items at the ready so they're not left out of the fun!
The children had a great time sharing stories of fireworks, parades and barbecues with their friends. We assisted the children in sharing stories about their experiences and in asking their friends questions about what they did.
The children have been doing a lot of different activities in the afternoons including working at the carpentry table, creating shapes with clay under the veranda, and of course a good deal of song and dance. They're also enjoying meeting new friends and co-mingling with the other classes.
BROWN COTTAGE
(Mulberry, Camellia)We hope everyone enjoyed the 4th of July. We heard lots of children talking about their excursions out to see the fireworks. More than one child commented on how pretty, and loud, the fireworks were!
This week the children made watermelon popsicles and watermelon juice! Both very big hits.
We’ve got a magician coming next week to perform for the whole school, and later in the month we’ll see a marionette show!
Reminders:
- It is very important to remember to check your Parent Pocket frequently for school information and correspondence from teachers and the office.
- Everything your child brings to school from home must have a name on it (clothes, lunch boxes, hats, towels).
- Please be sure your child has a complete change of clothes at school for accidents and water play.
