STUDY ON HOW KIDS THINK ABOUT GENDER NORMSClare Conry-Murray, mom of Aidan Conry-Murray (Ginkgo), is doing a study on how kids' thinking about gender norms develops from preschool to elementary school. She will be conducting interviews this summer at GLM. If you are interested in having your child participate, look for the flyer and consent letter in your child's backpack, or e-mail her at cconry@berkeley.edu.
PARENT PARTICIPATION HOURSAugust 18th is the last day to wrap up your Parent Participation Hours for this school year. Take a Break will continue throughout the summer and parents are needed to assist with the hot lunch program on Fridays. There are other projects as well; sewing, tightening screws on chairs, and laminating, just to name a few. Please contact the school office or your child’s teacher.
(Please note: Hours done this summer apply to the 2005/2006 school year. They cannot be used towards the 2006/2007 school year).

LAKE PARK CAMPUS (Magnolia, Ginkgo, Live Oak)
We are having a wonderful summer so far and the children are having a lot of fun. We pass on some important reminders for the remainder of the summer.
1. We would appreciate if you would drop off your child(ren) between 8:00 and 8:45. It prepares all of us for fall and will help us make transition into our morning activities easier.
2. Please send your child in or with a bathing suit. We are having water play every day in this heat and want everyone who wants to, participate. Towels are not really needed as they dry off very quickly, however they are welcome if the child wants. Also please label swimsuits and towels with child’s name or initials.
3. PLEASE, PLEASE, apply sunscreen, head to toe, before your child comes to school. It is your responsibility and we need the help to make sure the children are safe in the sun.
4. Beginning next week, pick up for Lake Park children will be on the playground lunch area until 5:00.
We so appreciate your attention to these matters.
UPPER CAMPUS(Jacaranda, Juniper)
The children enjoyed a magic show by Brian Scott last week. He made things disappear and reappear and had volunteers do magic of their own. By far the most popular trick, however, was when Mr. Scott drew a face with magic markers that began to move its eyes and even talk!
Reminder: during the summer days we spend many hours outdoors, whether doing work outside, playing in the water, or just playing. Though we will apply sunblock whenever we go swimming, it's very important that you put sunblock on your child's exposed skin every morning.
Many younger children are transitioning into new environments during the summer. Some are spending their days in new classrooms, some are meeting new teachers, and some are new to the school altogether. In any case, you can ease their transition by talking to them about the new things they can expect to see, the process of saying goodbye in the morning, and when they can expect you to pick them up. As always, if your child needs help saying goodbye in the morning you can give a teacher a nod or a wave and we will help you and your child. And if you have any questions, please feel free to ask a teacher.
DON'T FORGET!!! Opera camp starts soon. See the flyers on campus or check this website for more information.
BROWN COTTAGE(Mulberry, Camellia)
It has been very hot lately so please dress your child in shorts, sandals, and t-shirts, etc. There has been, and will continue to be, a lot of water activities being enjoyed. Please make sure your child also has at least one extra change of clothes. LABEL EVERYTHING!. Remember to apply sunscreen in the morning and we will re-apply it to all the children when we go outside.
Parents who still need participation hours are invited to sign up to help with the pizza lunches on Fridays (Take A Break). This is a great time to visit during lunch with the children and meet other parents. August 18th is the last day to wrap up your hours. If you are interested please contact the office at 510-836-4313.
On Tuesday, July 25th, we have the Fratello Marionettes coming to school. They will perform “The Vaudeville Follies” at 10 am in the Magnolia classroom. Everyone is welcome!
Mark your calendars: Friday, July 28th is a minimum day. School will be closed at 1 p.m. so that staff members may attend Tania Rankins’ (elementary teacher) wedding!
