STUDY ON HOW KIDS THINK ABOUT GENDER NORMSClare Conry-Murray, mom of Aidan Conry-Murray (Ginkgo), is doing a study on how kids' thinking about gender norms develops from preschool to elementary school. She will be conducting interviews this summer at GLM. If you are interested in having your child participate, look for the flyer and consent letter in your child's backpack, or e-mail her at cconry@berkeley.edu.
PARENT PARTICIPATION HOURSAugust 18th is the last day to wrap up your Parent Participation Hours for this school year. Take a Break will continue throughout the summer and parents are needed to assist with the hot lunch program on Fridays. There are other projects as well; sewing, tightening screws on chairs, and laminating, just to name a few. Please contact the school office or your child’s teacher.
(Please note: Hours done this summer apply to the 2005/2006 school year. They cannot be used towards the 2006/2007 school year).

LAKE PARK CAMPUS (Magnolia, Ginkgo, Live Oak)
It is hard to believe, but summer is nearing the end!
In order to begin transitioning the children into the school year routine, we will be grouping the children into their home classrooms, Magnolia, Gingko, and Live Oak on Monday, August 7th. Thank you for all of your help in making this transition as smooth as possible. Feel free to let us know of any concerns either you or the children have. We will still continue with our summer fun and outdoor activities.
Please continue to cover your child in sunscreen in the morning.
Some of the children enjoyed a wonderful performance of Greek dancers. They demonstrated dances from many regions in Greece and also informed the children about customs and dress.
UPPER CAMPUS(Jacaranda, Juniper)
We would like to welcome yet another baby, Ezra Zachary Trost-Goldhammer, Ruby's little brother to our GLM community! He was born last week with very little fuss and is doing well at home with his Mom and Dad. Ruby says he cries a lot and he is very, very little! Je'den's little sister, Taylor, and Bella's little sister, Ariana, who were both born last month, are getting bigger by the day and doing very well too! Congratulations to all three of these families! We look very forward to the possibility of all three being future GLM students!
This week we had a visit from the Fratello Marionettes! The children were pretty enthralled by these puppets with strings who danced, sang, did acrobatics with no hands (they used their mouths!), did gymnastics and played tricks. Many of them loved the hen that laid an egg as well as doing the splits, not at the same time that is!!
The cooler, foggy weather was welcomed later in the week. Water days continued throughout the week both in the morning and afternoon.
On Monday, GLM's annual opera camp began, continuing for two weeks until August the 11th. They will be using the campus for the first week and then moving onto the site of the performance for the second week. During the first week they will use the Pinewood Building (location of the Elementary and Joanna's office) as their base camp. Many of our 5 year olds have signed up for the camp and will be taking part, too. This year the children will be performing the story of Persephone. One of the ways in which Jacaranda and Juniper will be impacted is by the traffic and parking in the mornings, especially on the first day. The best way to avoid any frustrations is to arrive before 8.30 am or after 9ish.
BROWN COTTAGE(Mulberry, Camellia)
If you brought any extra clothes to school please be sure they are labeled. This applies to anything you’d like to get back: lunch box, drinking cup, blanket, etc.
A friendly reminder - class starts at 8:45 a.m. If you arrive late please ask a teacher to help with your good-bye. We want the children to remain focused and able to concentrate. If your child has an appointment or is out sick please notify the office (510-836-4313). Remember to check your Parent Pocket regularly for information and communication from the offices and teachers.
A new and younger child was trying to take the pouring work to a table. An older child approached her and asked "Can I help you?" then took the tray to a table and walked away with a smile. Ah, the satisfaction of helping others!
