NINA REISER
We are all thinking of and praying for Nina Reiser and her family and friends. GLM asks that parents NOT talk about this in front of children. Please remain mindful and use discretion and respect. Thank you to Jennifer Pahlka for this important reminder.

FAMILY FUN DAY & SCHOLASTIC BOOK FAIR
Tomorrow is a big day at GLM – Family Fun Day and the Scholastic Book Fair, from 10 am to 2 pm. Be sure to join us for food, fun and activities!

TURN IN YOUR ORDER FOR SCHOOL PICTURES!
If you are planning on ordering school pictures, please return the order form with your check by Monday, Oct. 16. If you are unhappy with the photos, or missed photo day, please call Dennis or Amy Geaney ASAP at 510-465-2131 to schedule a shoot.

HALLOWEEN
This year each GLM campus (Lake Park, Brown Cottage, Juniper/Jacaranda & Redwood) will have individual Halloween celebrations on Friday, Oct. 27, beginning at 9:30 am. Please check with your Room Parents regarding volunteering to help with activities.

ALL-SCHOOL ASSEMBLIES

Please note that children not normally here on a day we have all-school assemblies are invited to join us, along with parents and siblings. If you have questions about particular performances, please call the school office.

SOUND OF THE WEEK Each Wednesday your child is encouraged, with your help, to find an object at home (preferably not a toy) that begins with the sound of the week. Put it in a labeled bag to share with your child’s class. Next week’s sound is “F” as in Farm, Flower, and Fountain.

PLEASE,
As the weather changes please send your child with a coat or sweater. We try to eat outside any time it is dry. Rain boots are fantastic (and required) and waterproof pants are a good idea for jumping in puddles outside (we love hunting for puddles) but please bring some inside shoes as well. As always, LABEL, LABEL, LABEL everything!
When you are picking up your children at the end of the day, please end your phone conversations in the parking lot so you are more able to give your child your full attention. This can set a positive tone for the rest of the evening!

CHILDCARE NEEDED
I am looking for childcare for two days a week (Tuesday and Thursday) for my two daughters, ages 5 and 9. Both have after-school activities and would love to have a fun, caring person with a car take them to their activities. The hours would be from 3:30pm to 6pm. Please contact Celeste at crgrinage@yahoo.com if you can help or have a referral.

NANNY AVAILABLE
Our wonderful Nanny is available now that our children are in school. Our nanny, Betty, has been with us for 4 years. She raised our 4 and 1.5 year old daughters who are now at GLM.
She treats our children as if they are her own, giving them lots of love and attention. She took our daughters out almost every day, typically going to the library and the park, walking around the lake, feeding the birds, going to MOCHA and many other activities. She is reliable and shows up on time.
She is available from 7:30-6:00 M-F. She does not drive, so she prefers to be with a family or a share that is easily accessible, as we are, from public transportation. We live near Lake Merritt on the Oakland/Piedmont border. Betty is English speaking. Please call the school office for her number. I am sure that you will be happy that you found her. I (Kara Kelly) can be reached at kara_g_kelly@yahoo.com. should you have questions or need a reference.

ANOTHER NANNY AVAILABLE
Are you looking for someone you can feel confident will nurture, protect and love your infant? Does home cooked baby food sound good to you? Would you like someone who is more than willing to help around the house as your child naps? Are you looking for someone whose hours are flexible (nights and weekends) to accommodate your crazy schedule? Have we (Landen Manuel’s family, Juniper) got a nanny for you! Maria Martinez is all of this and more. Our infant took to her immediately. He smiles and actually grabs for her when she arrives each morning. As I work around the house I never hear a peep out of him. She seems to quickly get in tune with the child’s rhythms. And did I mention she speaks Spanish, takes the baby for walks and dances with him? If you are interested call GLM office for her phone number.

CLASS NEWS

REDWOOD (ELEMENTARY)

This week our class had a delicious cultural potluck on Tuesday in celebration of Indigenous People's Day! Each of the children brought a traditional dish from their own cultures. There was so much food and it was all very delicious! Here is a list of the items that the children brought: corn dogs, fried chicken, cheese enchiladas, Spanish rice, cucumber salad, sushi, red beans and rice, chips and salsa, collard greens, salami and crackers, corn bread, and cheese sticks. We had a great time eating our food outside and sharing how the items were made. Thank you to all of the parents who helped out!
Some of the children went to meet the author of the book “Marcello the Movie Mouse” on Friday. They had so much fun acting out the story at the Lucciola book store. Thank you to Noemi de Guzman and Ora Watson for taking the children.
The children have been really busy this week writing their own short stories. The class has been split into four groups and they each have a different theme to their story. The stories vary from non-fiction to beginning readers. They have been so focused and are excited to get to read their rough drafts on Saturday at the book fair.
We will also be selling our school t-shirts on Saturday at Family Fun Day! Be sure to stop by and get one for your child if they don't have one already. We are also taking orders for sweat shirts. It's a great way to show your school spirit!

JACARANDA
The Montessori curriculum is set up for children in three year age groups: 0-3 yrs, 3-6 yrs, 6-9, and 9-12 yrs at GLM for instance. Children in these three-year age spans learn from one another through peer teaching and through a variety of materials that allow lessons to be given to various ages of children. This is where traditional American schooling and Montessori differ: whereas traditional classroom experience only begins at five years, in the Montessori environment, the five year old is continuing his or her third year with the same adults who are receiving advanced lessons and individualized attention from those adults.
The Jacaranda and other primary classrooms at GLM have been gathering the five year olds together to play volleyball and other games this year. The elementary class has given beginning lessons, and then the five year olds continue to play after the elementary class leaves.
GLM is offering parents of all ages of children an opportunity to learn more about how the third year benefits your child(ren) in two upcoming events in October and November.
On October 24, 2006, the Jacaranda classroom will be hosting Ginny Sackett, a teacher trainer from Portland, Oregon, as she talks to all GLM parents about the third year in the Montessori classroom. Childcare and dinner for both adults and children will be provided for this event.
On November 11, 2006, the Jacaranda classroom will again host Ginny Sackett for a Parent Information Night, as she returns to talk to Jacaranda parents only about the third year in the Jacaranda classroom. Childcare and dinner for both adults and children will be provided for this event, also.
The Jacaranda class needs a parent volunteer or volunteers to sew two or three aprons for the classroom. The materials await your nimble fingers here in the classroom! Contact the Jacaranda teachers in person or by email.
Thank you to Leo’s family for the hand-grown and-picked grapes again this week. They were, again, beautiful and delicious!
Please do not hesitate to email the Jacaranda teachers at jacarandateacher@grandlakemontessori.com with any questions about your children or about the curriculum.

JUNIPER

We are continuing to study about the continents. We talked about our earth and how it is made of land and water. And led by our very own Tyler Knowlton, we've had many discussions about our solar system.
For the month of October we will study about leaves, as this is fall. We will take leaf walks, do leaf art, discuss different leaf shapes and study parts of the leaf depending, of course, on the age of the child.
We have started cutting out pictures from magazines about our basic fundamental needs such as transportation, clothing, food, physical, and shelter. Each child will make his/her own “needs chart”.
During our intro to fish (parts of the fish) we talked about how fish are vertebrates, that is, animals with backbones. All the children said, "I have a backbone!" The children have enjoyed learning about the four fins; dorsal fins, pelvic fins and the lateral. More parts of the fish to come!
Please feel free to check in with the teacher about what we are doing every month.
WISH LIST
1. Headphones - new or used
2. Small tape player
3. Pictures of all kinds of fish - colored, postcards, etc.
Thank you for your continued support of the Juniper class. Thanks in advance for attending the Book Fair and Family Fun Day this Saturday! See you there.

LIVE OAK
The weeks are flying by! We had a great time this week. We learned about birds from all over the world and were face to face with a raptor, two kinds of owls and two kinds of parrots. During the question/answer session many students asked very interesting questions, but the winning question was, “I know the birds come from eggs but how do the birds get inside the eggs?” This age-old question was asked by Emily, age four.
Several of our children have expressed interest in helping to make their lunches. This would be a great opportunity to spend time having a conversation about what they enjoy eating and what they would prefer to be different.
We were all deeply saddened to say goodbye to two of our friends Semeon and Jaxson last Friday. We had a goodbye ceremony where we told each of the children what we were grateful to them for. All of the children were so gracious and thoughtful; it was truly beautiful!
In the classroom we are learning about the names of leaves (trees) the shape of leaves and the parts of a leaf. We are also learning about fish, their names and parts.

GINKGO
The Ginkgo Picnic was Saturday October 7. It was a nice day and lots of great company. Thank you to all the families that came and brought the delicious foods! A special thank you to our Room Parents, Joanne Yoshimura and Bernadette Chi, for organizing the event.
The Ginkgo class would also like to thank Sarah Goldberg for finding and buying the class a steel toaster.
This week we have started studying parts of a leaf. We’ve been learning the names of the different parts; veins, blade, petiole, and stipules.
During the last few weeks the Ginkgo children have been learning about feelings; happy, sad, mad, surprised, afraid, disgusted. The children are learning that people may have different feeling from each other and that feelings can change. We use stories to discuss these topics.
Our Halloween celebration is coming up on October 27. Please remember that drop-off will happen on the play yard. If you are not staying with your child for the celebration please find a Ginkgo teacher on the yard and let us know. Please put your child’s costume on over their clothes.

MAGNOLIA
It has been another busy week in the Magnolia classroom. The children all had a fun time decorating our class box for the Book Fair. Thank you, Kendra Collins, for your help with this.
Many of the children have been busy doing a work that involves punching out continents with a pushpin (this takes lots of patience!) to make hemisphere maps of their own. We are also learning a new song about the continents as a fun way to remember them.
We will be sending out a volunteer email next week for Halloween. Our Halloween celebration will be on Friday, Oct. 27th at 9:30 am. All are welcome.
Please be sure to attend Family Fun Day and stop by the Book Fair tomorrow.

MULBERRY

This week the class has been working on independence. The children are getting much better at putting on their own jackets, and are getting used to “up and over”; we place the jacket on the floor with the tag at their toes, they place their hands in the arm holes, reach up and over. Also, we are working on putting on our own shoes and socks. Velcro shoes are great.
Saturday is Family Fun Day from 10-2 and the Scholastic Book Fair! We are still in need of parents to help out with the snow cone and popcorn booth. It is really a fun day for all.
Our Halloween celebration will be on October 27 from 9:00 - 10:30 am. Save the date - parents are welcome to come and join the fun.
Song of the week:
5 little pumpkins sitting on a gate.
The first one said, “Oh my, it's getting late”.
The second one said, “There are witches in the air.”
The third one said, “But we don't care.”
The fourth one said, “Let’s run and run and run.”
The fifth one said, “We are ready for Halloween fun.”
Then oooohhh went the wind and out went the lights
And five little pumpkins rolled out of sight.

CAMELLIA
We hope everyone enjoyed a wonderful Indigenous People's Day.
Last week the teachers gave lessons on sitting on our bottoms and using our words. We're making great progress. The children are saying, “This is MY work” and “I'm not done with my work yet”. We’ve also been giving grace and courtesy lessons. In the morning we greet the children with “Hello, good morning” or shake their hands. They say please whenever they need help, and thank you after they’ve been helped. This morning a child was having difficulty connecting the train tracks. Another child asked, “Can I help?” The reply was “Yes”. After they connected the track together, the first child said, “Thank you.” What a wonderful moment! Most of the children are using please; for example, “Please can I have some water”, or “Can I have more apple please”.
This week’s sound was "E", and we shared Egg, Elephant, E-mail, Earring, Ear mop, and Eel. Next week’s sound is "F" as in Fish, Flag, and Flashlight.
REMINDER: This Saturday is GLM Family Fun Day and Scholastic Book Fair, from 10am -2 pm. Please come and join us! We still need help with the set-up and clean-up. Sign-up form is on each class clipboard.
THERE IS A SIGN HANGING ACROSS THE STAIRS THAT STATES “CLASS HAS BEGUN. PLEASE ENTER QUIETLY THROUGH THE KITCHEN”. PLEASE ASK A TEACHER TO HELP WITH THE GOOD-BYE IN THE KITCHEN, NOT THE CLASSROOM. WE DON'T WANT TO BREAK THE CHILDREN’S FOCUS AND CONCENTRATION. ALSO, CLASS STARTS AT 8:45 AM. Thank you in advance.
