CLASS NEWS
REDWOOD (ELEMENTARY)The children did such a wonderful job on the holiday performance. They sang full versions of the sons: Dreidel, Jingle Bells, Hanukkah, Frosty, Santa Claus is coming to Town, Kwanzaa, Here Comes Santa Claus, and We Wish You a Merry Christmas. The upper elementary recited the poem, The Night Before Christmas. Clare also played Jingle Bells on the piano for us. They were all so poised, and I am very proud of them! A big thank you to Marcia and Heidi for helping us clean-up after the performance.
We have a new after-care teacher named Vanessa Carter. She worked during the summers here when she was a teenager. The children are all excited about having her here. Please introduce yourselves and welcome her.
Our class has joined the People to People International School and Classroom program. The program was founded in 1956 by President Eisenhower, and the purpose of its organization was “…to enhance international understanding and friendship through education, cultural, and humanitarian activities involving the exchange of ideas and experiences directly among peoples of different countries and diverse cultures.” Through this program we have pen-pals in Lethbridge, Canada. They are also from a Montessori school. We received letters from them right before the holiday break and we are now sending our responses to them. It has been fun for the elementary students to practice typing/writing letters to another child. It has also been great for them to learn about a new culture.
JACARANDAMonday, January 8, please note the Kindergarten and First Grade Information Night, hosted by the elementary parents (including Mr. Keating!). The meeting begins at 6:30 pm in the elementary classroom. Please bring your questions regarding your child's development and needs during these crucial early years.
The Jacaranda cultural calendar continues as the year begins anew. The focuses of the month's cultural calendar are as follows: in geography, South America; in Botany/Science, the human body; in Zoology, parts of the bird, varieties of birds, feathers; in geometry, quadrilaterals; in music, instruments of the orchestra and of the world; in Holiday events, Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. As with all lessons in the Montessori environment, the lessons are not given according to a rigid schedule, but rather following the children's needs at the particular moment. When, for instance, the child has seen a bird eating from the bird feeder, then the adult follows with a teaching moment. "What did you notice about the bird?" or another general question that is intended to jump-start a dialogue with the child or children. There follows an opportunity to have a sensorial lesson on birds and what makes them unique from other living things: according to the age or development of the child, as simple as living/non living or all the way up to different birds on different continents and how their feather structure differs according to the different species habitats and needs.
Those families who have not yet had a conference with Ms. Leck, please remember it is your responsibility to schedule a time and date with her in order to have the opportunity to follow your child's developmental progress in the Jacaranda classroom.
JUNIPERA New Year
Happy New Year and welcome back to all of the Juniper families! It's wonderful to see you all again after the holiday, and though it was only two weeks the children seem to have grown by leaps and bounds. We are very excited about the new year!
Cultural Calendar
During January, Juniper will be focusing its culture and science studies on the human body, frogs, and South America. Look for new activities in the classroom and encourage your children to explore these topics by asking them questions and engaging them in conversation about these topics.
Clothing Bags and Rain Jackets
Many of the children's clothing bags are lacking vital elements like underwear and pants! Please be sure to check these supplies on a regular basis to ensure that they remain stocked. These bags are not just in case of messes or accidents, but also serve as emergency supplies in case of earthquakes or other unforeseen disasters. Also, though we appreciate your sending your children with plenty of warm clothes, we also ask that you not overdress them. The jacket hooks can only hold so much, and because they are close together they can easily become overcrowded. Thanks!
Crab FeedThe Crab Feed is coming on January 27! Mark your calendars and set the date for one of GLM's most successful and fun-filled events. Don't miss this annual engagement. Look for more details as the date approaches.
LIVE OAKThis week has gone by extremely quickly! It was great to hear about all of the children's holiday breaks. They sounded wonderful.
The children had two days of music and dance this week with Mr. Hoffman and Mr. Moody. They sang and danced to songs from all over the world. The holiday season was great practice for their triumphant voices. We also got the chance to harvest the first crop of kale and cabbage. Lettuce and spinach are on their way!
We also had the chance to celebrate two birthdays this week. One more is coming up on Monday. Happy birthday to Emily, Ariana, and Kalyn!
We have started to read and learn about dinosaurs (every child’s favorite!) this week. We have some great books and cards to work on. Soon the children will be teaching their family members about some wild dino facts- have fun with it!
GINKGOHappy New Year Ginkgo Families!
We would like to thank Erin Scott, Chiara’s mom, for coming in Thursday, December 14th, and doing a Christmas celebration with the children. She told the children the story of Christmas and shared a special snack.
We would also like to thank Sarah Postyn, Sam’s mom, for coming in and doing a Hanukkah celebration with the children. She shared the story of Hanukkah and a snack.
We’ve heard that each of our families had a wonderful holiday season. The children have shared stories about the fun trips and family get-togethers.
This week the children came in the classroom to discover that some of the language work on the shelves had been removed and replaced with new language cards. Before vacation we had materials out about different fruits, vegetables, trees, and plants. Now, we’re studying animals, in particular, amphibians and mammals.
Happy Birthday to Elliot Gassman who is now 3 years old! His parents came into the classroom (Sarah Thomas and Brian Gassman) and told the children Elliot’s life story.
MAGNOLIAHappy New Year everyone! We hope all of you had a very restful holiday.
We will start off the new year with the study of birds. We have a beautiful nest found some time ago by Ori and Jude Strayer. Any other artifacts of this nature are always welcome.
This is also a great time to introduce the children to some Spanish vocabulary that is bird- related, i.e. parts of the bird and species. We will also learn two new songs, “Mi
Gillo” (My Rooster), and “La Pata” (The Duck).
Mr. Hoffmann has resumed his weekly visits, singing some old favorites as well as helping practice our new songs.
MULBERRYHappy New Year to all. It was good to see all of the children after the long break. It looked like they all grew an inch or more!
The children fell right back into their routines, but it seems like parents are having a hard time getting back into the morning routines. Just a reminder that class starts at 8:45 and it is very disruptive to have good-byes happening all morning long.
We would like to welcome two new students to the class, Hunter Collins and Isabel Sade. Please say “Hello”!
Next week, on Tuesday, we will begin our Little Chefs program and cook lunch with the children. Every Tuesday a small group of toddlers will prepare a lunch for the other children in the Brown Cottage. Next week we will be make burritos and cooked apples.
On January, 27th, from 4:00 - 8:00 pm is the school’s 3rd annual Crab Feed. It is an event not to be missed! Not just crab, there is chicken and salad, and veggie dishes, too. We have a great DJ who will be there, encouraging dancing. A great evening of adult conversation, terrific food and music (childcare will be provided at GLM in the Brown Cottage).
Song of the week:
The tiny caterpillar crawled upon a leaf,
Spun a little chrysalis, then fell fast asleep.
While she was sleeping she dreamt that she could fly.
Later when she woke up she was a butterfly!
Quote of the week: When we begin to draw the child into family chores, there are, of course, difficulties. But taking time to show a child how to help is actually easier in the long run than trying to keep her occupied and out of the way. Because she will keep insisting, she will forever turn up underfoot. What she is saying is "Let me help, let me be a part of your life!" Or she will pull away: “I want to do it myself!"
CAMELLIAHappy New Year and welcome back! We hope everyone had a wonderful break with your families and friends. The children didn't miss a beat upon their return and they all immediately concentrated and focused on their works, including water painting, matching games, and table washing.
In circle we shared where we went and who we visited during the holidays. One child said, "I went to New Flexico” ( he meant New Mexico!).
Sound of the Week resumed with "N". We had Necktie, Nightlight, Noses, and Number Nine. Next week’s sound is "O" as in Orange, can Opener, and Onion.
Starting next week, every Tuesday, we are pleased to offer a new activity: "LITTLE CHEF". No lunch boxes needed because the children are going to prepare their own lunches. They'll able to express freely and independently their food creativity in the kitchen with teacher guidance.
Mark your calendars: January 27, Saturday, is GLM’s 3rd annual Crab Feed. We won’t only be offering crab, but also chicken and a vegetarian dish.
Dates to remember: January 12, Friday, is Teacher In Service Day – no childcare and, also, January 15, Monday, is Martin Luther King, Jr Day. School will again be closed and no childcare.
Quote of the week: Continued with Food Prepartion
When he is finished, delight in the effects of the child's work, rather than praising the child directly, say "How nice and shiny you've made it." This means much more to him than " What a good boy you are." Maybe your goal was to have a good boy, but his goal was to make something shine, and knowing he succeeded builds his self-confidence.
